b) 75% of my time watching, 25% of my time making AMVs
It's pretty common for people who've been in a "scene" for years on end to get fed up with the average herd (most anything that shows up on New Vid on the Block). I've seen it happen elsewhere. Eventually it all gets boring, or at least that's the path I went through. Consume -> produce+consume -> produce -> get bored, wander off, rants about "those damn newbies" optional.
Anyway, I don't consider myself much of an editor, so 75/25 is the closest one for me. Quite frankly I find much of editing boring, increasingly so over time. As a cost/benefit analysis I'd mostly rather play the images in my head these days. I'm just as entertained, and I haven't wasted months of work over something that will never turn out the way I wanted and about which MAYBE three people will maybe say something neutral or positive, if I'm extremely lucky.
Heh. So yeah, more watching than editing. It's better all around that way.

Ditto, basically.dwchang wrote:The closest answer is E sadly. It's not entirely true since your %'s are a bit large in delta, but I'd say I watch AMVs maybe once a month and only a handful at a time. No scratch that, I watch some of my favorites once a month as well as a handful of new vids that folks recommend, but still maybe 10% of my time.

When it comes to other people's AMVs, I watch one or two, maybe three, a month.
I'm always thinking of an interview with a manga artist that I read a few years back. He was asked which other manga he read. He said he never read other people's work. He didn't want his own creative process to be contaminated.
I'm not sure if it really works that way. When so many people are in a field, almost nothing is really original. But I suppose if you came up with "it" on your own, that feeling may be all that matters.
In my case, it's simple lack of time.

I spend a lot of time watching AMVs. Occasionally I get an idea for a video. ............................ (several months later)................... (still watching videos) ......................... Then I finally get time to work on a video. I've watched a lot of videos, but only made 3 so far. My percentage of time spent making videos would be low compared to watching them. Although since you're asking where I want to be, I would say option B. I still like watching videos, but would like to spend more time making some of my own. At least the time between getting the idea and actually starting gives me time to plan the video out.

Contaminated? That's kind of harsh. It's like saying everyone is poison but yourself - because you still release your vids, you clearly don't think yours would poison anyone.
People who never watch others' work worry me... it's like "None of your work is good enough to grace my exalted eyeballs. Now here. Watch everything I do, even though I could give a damn about your work."
If it weren't for the watchers you wouldn't have an audience. Even if you think they're rabble, you need them.

... and I don't take into account all the AMVs I watch just to test the video player I'm developing ^_^
Anyway, I love both, editing and watching. I think I may have watched a total of about 500 different AMVs, and I've probably watched some of them about 40 times or more. (Odorikuruu !!!!)
at least recently, i remember spending more time editing last year (before i had physics and orgo, and before local downloads and coming to the forums)

I too am also a B. I can't help it. I truly like watching AMVs. Half the time I am too lazy to something myself so I like to watch others and get entertained. Sometimes it gives me the drive to finish what I was worknig on myself. When that overdrive kicks in I stick to editing but then I get tired. I watch other people's stuff then go at it again another time. Watching other videos don't kill my ideas cause I think most of them come from songs that I listen to. Hehehehe I'm a watcher...
