Watch Gundam Wing. Every military character (almost - except a few of the younger officers) is old, ugly, and has an unappealing voice, while female 'minor characters' stay as pretty as the main characters. They are minor characters, and you aren't meant to like them. Yu Yu Hakusho - every character in the audience of the dark tournament (except the fangirls) was an ugly male 'thing' - no attempt made because they were supposed to be unattractive - the 'fangirls' are there for prettiness, so minor or not, they look the part. Rurouni Kenshin - government officials again portrayed as old and/or ugly males - but note that none of the minor female characters are anything but pretty.Blitzkrieg1701 wrote:Just to keep things in persepctive (and off topic, sorry), just what percentage of anime MALES are overtly unatractive?
Most anime I've seen (aside from shoujo anime where it's all about how pretty the girls are so even the guys/monsters tend to be just as pretty) have nice looking main characters, pretty minor female characters, and butt ugly minor male characters. Why? If they care enough to make sure the guys like those minor girls, they should do the same with the minor guys. But so far I haven't seen many that do that (though the 'minor good guys' in YYH tend to look nice, so there are exceptions).

But the realistic element is what makes anime so unique from western animation. In anime, people bleed, they get hurt, and can even die. Its so different from the western animation cliches, that anime actually has cliche's of their own; such as there's rarely a truely evil bad man, just a guy who was once really good but has suffered such horrible trauma earlier in his life, that he has deemed the world to be the true evil and must cleanse the badness by wiping out the entire population of the planet, its either that or he's just really selfish, but NOT evil. Another anime cliche is the tragic hero, where the more likable character dies and the bumbling sidekick witnesses the whole thing and takes the event to heart. Other cliches are old perverts, distustingly cute pets, distustingly cute kids, and the apparently strong female lead who ends up being weak and defenseless in the end.Otohiko wrote:As for criticism of the 'OMG ANIME CHARACTERS NOT REALISTIC' - bah. You do realize it's not reality. I don't want to watch... real people. I want to be entertained/engaged. The characters have done a good job of that so far.
But like you, Otohiko, I wouldn't want anime to be too real, but I wouldn't want it to be over-the-top as well. Whenever I feel like watching something over-the-top, I watch WWE or other pro-wrestling programs. It's like soap-opera for men, 'rope-opera' if you want to put it that way.

Actually, excellent points, can't argue with that. In that case, I probably looked at that argument in the wrong way before...demented wrote:But the realistic element is what makes anime so unique from western animation. I'll admit straight up a lot of stuff in anime is cliche by now. Either that, or plays based off cliches. Personally, I don't mind it. But it's there, true.
I think there's enough exceptions or good plays on the cliches to keep me busy when I want something serious; and same-old will do when I'm looking for some basic entertainment. Which, in most cases, is what I see anime as in the first place.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
