Free ops for the next 10 callers!

Post by badmartialarts » Tue Mar 23, 2004 8:51 am

I am stuck in a rut.

My first two videos aren't very good. So, in an effort to improve myself, I'm going to analyse the works of others. What works, what doesn't. If I can see what I like and hate in other's work, maybe I'll begin to see what direction to take myself.

So, I'm getting something out of op'ing your videos. So don't worry about op'ing mine; I've got a pretty good idea of what went right and wrong with them already. Of course, if you really want to....profile link is available at the bottom of post (the BAD MARTIAL ARTS banner, or the standard link)

Here's my guidelines:

I op how I op. I can't define it better than that. If I like a video, it'll get high scores. I look for technical proficiency and good pacing, sync, and storytelling (a skill which I lack). I've seen plenty of AMVs in my life, good and bad. So I'll tell it how I see it. If you're looking for high scores, bring the high quality videos. Average videos get average scores (for me, 7s or 6s). Poor videos....well...I've so far tried to avoid truly poor videos. Every video has at least the redeeming feature of having been created by someone, so I take that into account. As for reviewabllity, I'm quite happy with the little definitions that pop up, so don't expect a 9 or 10 unless it's a video I drool over.

I do my best to lay out the video, and talk about any little 'nit-picks' that I find with it, with possible solutions, if I know them. So, I'm trying to make you better. Don't take what I say too hard, and don't take it at all if you don't like what I say. Move on and make videos your way, and I'll go my way.

Someone who wasn't happy with one of my reviews asked me, "How can YOU make a review if you can't make a good video yourself?" Well, I can't make a Hollywood grade movie, either, but I can sit in a theater, and say "That movie rocked!" or "That movie sucked!" It's called critique. Has nothing to do with personal talent or skill, to be able to recognize it in others.

As you can see, I like to ramble. So if you want a long, rambling, potentially helpful review that may or may not piss you off, then climb aboard this crazy train! I'll take the first ten, one video per person limit.

I'm gonna start on these ops tomorrow (it's 11 pm here in Korea).

LightningCountX, watch Megalomania. It's prettier (though probably worse in terms of direction). On first view of your vid, it's very pretty. I'm gonna crank my monitor gamma and watch it again for the dark parts (I think it's my monitor, not your video). :)

Janzki.....it's kind of funny since you indirectly credited my with the idea for that video. :)

On first viewing....wow....

It's "Lake in the Moonlight," though. At least, I'm pretty sure. Russian into English is a pain, sometimes.

I really need to watch Haibane Renmei....

keyboardsamurai, it played on WMP for me...

Interesting video. Bad sources, though. But still a nice video.
