AMV suggestion ^_^
Lol, if I had the know-how, the equipment (for encoding video and then putting it to music), and/or the time I think I would definitely do this...
Or has it been done already? I dunno...
I think someone(s) should make something like an anime Fantasia....you know, a series of amv's to classical music...something like that Kodomo no Omocha one I once saw to the William Tell Overture...or the Nutcracker Ballet Suite would be just perfect for a music video with magical girls....or senseless violence would be funny too! I don't even listen to that kind of music normally, but for some reason I think anime music videos to it are fun ^_^ Just a suggestion, I hope somebody thinks about it! Or maybe I'll be able to do it someday...who knows!

Re: AMV suggestion ^_^
I haven't heard of a series of classical amvs but...
but interesting suggestion. maybe i'll work on a 5-movement piece of Strauss' Die Fledermaus in the distant future.

Funny Thing...
We've already got a lot of videos set to classic music. I've done one myself:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=11659
About all we would need to make these into something like Disney's original Fantasia movie would be some narrative between the videos and a general ordering of them to provide some balance (for instance, the sacred/profane balance of "Night On Bald Mountain" and "Ave Maria" and the usage of footage set to each of the three kinds of music the narrator mentions when he's introducing the movie. And, of course, we would have to remaster some of the videos to make them as clear and viewable as possible. (I've been thinking of remastering mine when I get a little better footage.)

reply on one level:
try watching Princess Tutu. it's not entirely a music show like Fantasia, but has beautiful artwork and plenty of music-driven scenes (not to mention the whole overlying ballet/fairytale theme).
reply on a second level:
it would be interesting if someone who owns a copy of fantasia would post the list of songs that are in it. then we could create it's anime counterpart. i'm not sure though, who should direct such a compilation, nor how they should go about directing it. certainly it would be advisable to avoid heavy re-use of the same scenes or the insertion of a really bad segment amongst several good ones, so it would make sense for someone really ambitious to volunteer as project director.
reply on a third level:
it could also be interesting to do one using all japanese-written traditional and classical music. i find it ironic that this site is almost entirely dominated by western bands (i'm guilty of that one myself) whilst it is dedicated showcasing the creative re-use of an eastern style of artwork. some flutes, kotos and taiko drums might be welcome additions to the catalog. this, of course, would work best if someone really familiar with traditional japanese music is involved in the project and music selection.

and, with regard to your initial examples:
william tell overture: see "caffene ecomium" (not sure on spelling)
nutcracker ballet with magical girls: definately watch Princess Tutu.
nutcracker ballet with senseless violence: i'm not certain, but i have to imagine there was a looney tunes or two where this was done. i do know for sure that they've used mozart and wagner, so why not tchaikovsky. not that an anime version would in any way hurt.

I see. A Fantasia Project (Animasia?). It would be an interesting MMEP (Massive Multi-Editer Project).
1. Toccata and Fugue in D Minor
2. Nutcracker Suite
3. Sorcerer's Appentice
4. Rite of Spring
5. Pastoral Symphony
6. Dance of the Hours
7. Night on Bald Mountian
8. Ave Maria

And no, I'm not volunteering.
