i used the wmm for a while myself - before switching to linux (and, conincidentally, before making my first amv). it should work fine if you throw over a high-bitrate wmv, as i have some great tools on my end for converting formats - provided not too much of the video information has been stripped out by compression.
the real challenge is going to be getting the exchange to work in the first place. i've discovered that, thanks the design of the university network i'm on, my IP is a bit of a moving target - so i'd essentially have to keep posting new ftp addresses every time i disconnect or reboot my computer (which, as a laptop, is at least once a week). consequently - if anyone else out there has a linux desktop machine with an ftp server installed, it might be a help to the process. if not, i'll just have to find a workaround.
in the mean time, i'll finish the project page and post it to my website. i can link to my ftp from there and update that link from time to time if i have to - just realize that there might be a bit more downtime than you would experience from a dedicated, professionally administered server.

Damn. Like you I just saw Haibane Renmei and absolutely loved it. I've already ripped the DVD's and I'm searching frantically for a good song, preferably instrumental. Is it possible to do two AMV's with the same anime in a project? If not I may still be interested but I'd have to check out some of the suggestions and see what I can come up with.rose4emily wrote: Debussy - Reverie (I think this one would work beautifully with Haibane Renmei, and claim it for myself)

help is welcome from anyone who wants to give it.
i almost have all the necessary technical junk out of the way, so the project should be underway by the end of this weekend.
and i don't see any special problem with using the same anime twice. we might want to try to avoid the re-use of incredably recognizable scenes (like, say, the matrix-kiss from flcl or, as one person put it, the "infamous window scene" from cowboy bebeop), but there are definately some series like haibane and tutu that seem especially well suited to classical instrumental videos and contain plenty of material to go around. besides, yoshitoshi abe is an absolute genous with respect to his artwork, so i don't think the audience would easily tire of it.
if anyone has an idea for a song/anime pairing, please post it to either suggest or claim it, along with any details you might have for specific scene choices and so forth.
i think we might all have to do some tweaking to our individual segments to help ensure the continuity o the whole, but overall it seems to make sense to think of this as a collection of shorts, like fantasia, than as a single film.
i also have decided that i won't be making a list of allowed/disallowed anime for this project. if you think you can somehow pull off something that works with dragonball z, then go ahead and try it. i can't garuntee that every submission will make it into the final project (as it will need to meet certain space and time constraints to be downloadable, and it would only be fair to the people who put some real effort into this to group them with other people who put real effort into this), but i will consider anything that is submitted with as little prior bias as possible.
it should also be pointed out that not every submission had to be done with pure beauty in mind. classical music is wide enough a field to ecompass quite a bit of action and comedy as well, and think it would only be fair to allow the same of this project, especially where an occasional mood shift will help to keep listeners attentive and on their toes waiting to see what comes next.
no one should exclude themselves from this project because they feel they don't have the experience or the right style to handle it. as i've said before, if it works, i'll put it in, regardless of who made it or how closely it matches my own video-making style or taste in music or anime. not to mention the fact that i've only been at this for about a month, so i'd be hard pressed to find someone who's more of a newbie (at least in terms of time) than me.
finally: some inspiration pieces that i think you might want to see before beginning work on the project (and that i might ask about including if we come up a bit short on material)

hopefully these will serve as illustrations of some of the possibilities of instrumental videos. if you know of any more great examples, please post links and share.

I'm seriosly considering an AMV done to "Sins" which you can listen to here. The song was written by an AMV creator (XenoDrake) so I think it would be a cool twist. Do you think the song would hold it's own against these classical "greats?" I have the project file and am working with XenoDrake so I might be able to make it more clasical. What do you think Rose?

well, it all depends on what you do with it. it definately has a more modern sound to it, but it is instrumental, so i think it's fit amongst everything else will depend to a great extent on the video you wrap around it.
though i do have to ask - why's the left hand so loud? or rather the lower staff, as it sounds like a midi-generated composition. i like the melody and structure, but the volume of the repetitive lower voice kinda buries the more delicate and dynamic upper voice (10 years of piano-lesson dogma on balancing voices exits fingers on a keyboard of more than 88 keys...). you say you have the project file, so it might be worth playing around with that (and possibly with some tempo variations in the direction of slowing the piece down - the clip it moves at now seems a bit rushed for a continuous pace). if either of you play the piano, it might be worth sitting down at one to experiment with the expressive side of things and translate what you come up with into the composition (knowing, as i do, how difficult it is to get a proper recording of a solo piano with affordable equipment).

Eh, Pen-Pen - what anime do you plan to use?
Midi is fine with me. Perhaps more filtering to make it sound a bit more dynamic would benefit, but it's fine as is. (Besides, who am I to criticize midi when technically, over 70% of sounds in my recent vid are produced with midi )
I think it has potential, but, of course, it all ultimately in the visual choice. Also, piano is nice, but never too easy to deal with. I think it requires very careful editing on the visual, too. Well, maybe that's just me...
Do try. At this point, I seem to be becoming a big supporter of instrumental experimentation in AMV's. Dew it, and see where it goes...

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

The dynamic balance is the first thing I noticed too. I'll defiantly boost the left hand (once I figure out how, call me next century), maybe lower the drums. Also I'd like to mix it up a bit so I'll play around with tempo. Also I would try to make it as much like a piano as I can and see if I can disguise the MIDI origins. As for anime, I lost access to Haibane Renmei over which I am kicking myself... Hard. I'm struggling a little bit with the anime. Damn, this is the worst part for me. Once I get an idea I can run with it to the end of the world but it takes me forever to get one. I have a friend who has a DVD with some shorts from the maker of Akira I might look into for some originality. I'd need something with good artwork. A lot of nature scenes would be good too, maybe Mononoke? I'm still thinking...
