Don't worry, you're not alone like that - I've started editing again last night, and I have the exact same sentiment...

Well, again, as long as you've got the actual MIDI file and an editor to get at it, you've already got more freedom than those other AMV people who have to be happy with what they've got

Yea, I thought so too - Haibane would be a good choice... but if you can't, that is too bad.

Look around, see what's possible... on the other hand, a lot of good scenes can be pulled out of unexpected sources, as long as you know where to look...

Mononoke sounds alright. Actually, if you want good art that's fairly easy to get, look around at anime movies of all sorts. They're almost always good for art, and there's only 1 DVD to get...

And oh, am I ever familiar with the lack-of-source problem, too ~_~

pen pen: what distinguishes the piece from the classical genre is the percussion part (the snares on the upbeats is more typical of pop music.) but if we're not limiting the music to classical, it sounds like a possibility.

rose4emily: how long are these shorts supposed to be? sorry, i haven't watched Fantasia in over 10 years.

right now i'm still searching for ideas of my own. i have a video to a Debussy piece that's 99% completed (not originally made for this project), but the release has been delayed (long story), but once i get that finished i could let you use a section of that video for this project.

as for ideas, i'd like to see Evangelion to Verdi's Anvil Chorus (i have neither video nor audio).

wow. looks like the thread is picking up the pace again.

on the drum beat in XenoDrake's song, i think it can stay. like the piano, it might benefit from some stylistic touches, but it does add another layer to the piece that the video might be able to work with. for an example of a great meeting of modern(ish) style combined with classical (actually pre-classical) music - find a copy of "Jacques Loussier Plays Bach", the one with a sorta scary-looking old frenchman's face in black-and-white on the cover (he did a couple albums with that name). track 8, gavotte, is my absolute favorite of the bunch, and it not only has drums but a drum solo. they key is in playing with the lead-ins and stylistic elements of the percussion to make it flow with the piano (which is itself a very percussive instrument). XenoDrake's piece actually had some elements that are signatures of a jazz/ragtime composition (a few parts actually reminded me of Vince Guerraldi's - the "linus and lucy" guy's - compositional style. since jazz and ragtime are just a legitimate and diverse as classical music, i see no harm in letting them also find their way into the project. just listen to Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue" (especially track 3, "Blue in Green") or Scott Joplin's "Solace" for an idea of how soft and beautiful jazz and rags can be - and everyone knows of their bright and energetic side.

as to the length of individual segments, i think that should really depend on the piece and what you are doing with it. i wouldn't suggest throwing in anything like my 23-minute echoes vid, but if you have an 8-12 minute song or movement from a sonata or symphony that is dynamic enough to keep from getting old (about half of classical music fitting that definition), by all means, go ahead with it.

it looks like Haibane Renmei might get a lot of use in this project, but I only remember a few scenes that would really look bad if used more than once. the one where Rakka's wings emerge and the train in Reki's painting are the only two that come to mind. the rest seems to be plot-independent enough to not cause problems if repeated, unless i'm missing something on that list. it's not like FLCL where almost every scene is immediately identifiable and filled with its own second-long sub-plot.

and for some reason the Harry Chapman song "Six String Orchestrar" come to mind:

...and so i dream a bass will join me
and fill the bottom in
and maybe now some lead guitar
so it would not sound so thin
i'll need some drums to set the beat
and help me keep in time
and, way back in the distance
some strings would sound just fine...

just thought i'd share.

and by yours be pressed into the ground.

Curse my father for playing and singing that song for/to me enough when I was younger that I came to learn almost all the lyrics without actively trying.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

I just finished configuring my FTP server to allow uploads and set aside a folder for this project.

Because of the ugly security implications of allowing write permissions to anonymous FTP users, I'm not going to post the address here, but I will send it to you if you request it through e-mail.

I will also use it as a collecting point for difficult-to-find recordings that can be used in the project. This way you can submit a piece of music that someone is looking for but can't get or that you would like to see used but don't have enough time to make a video for yourself.

The web-page with all the guidelines and news for the project is coming, but for now it should suffice for you to start throwing in your rough ideas so we can all get an idea of what we have so far to work with.

There's a project?

Damn, I guess the point of the thread just went over my head - I kinda got carried away.

I read it now and I'm almost at a loss for words - this is what I wanted to make someday myself, I just lacked resources!

Wow. How are you for some more avant-garde things for this project? I like classical, but I'm far more into the more modern avant garde-ish things (think along the lines of The Wasteland).

Either way, I'll be in. I'll interrupt my current projeKctivising if I have to, even...

hopefully these will serve as illustrations of some of the possibilities of instrumental videos. if you know of any more great examples, please post links and share.
No man, that's not going to work at all. I mean I just don't see any way we could fit something like that in. not possible.

Seriously, you're part of the inspiration for this project. And I think you have the most experience with instrumental vids out of all of us. Anything you think is appropriate, chances are we'd be glad to have it.

*hopes I didn't offend anyone*

Well, that info page better be up soon, and I suggest making a thread somewhere in the forum for discussion of this thing!

I'll definitely look around. I have a big collection of a certain narrow vein of music, but I have two other good sources to draw on - 1) my father is a professional classical and acoustic jazz guitar player, so I could always look both at his own work and his collection of various music 2) my school has a good audio library that has a solid amount of borrow-able academic music that I occasionally enjoy...
