oh yea one major big thing with me is the QUALITY of the music, if its all hisy and popy and more or less painfull to the ears (like so many wmv entries) I just can't tolerate it. I'm one of those people that have to have a good sound system in their car, livingroom, etc. Funny I'm sortof hipocritical in that my PC speakers are kinda sucky. still its not those cheap 10$ speakers you can get at any convinience store.... I couldn't stand those ;p The perfect edited video and music/anime combination could be ruined for me if the audio quality is bad enough.

For me it's the song first. I pick the song and sorce at the same time but i edit in my mind the anime to the song. Since the musics going to be completely used generally you will never edit it.
Then the sorce which will be chosen for a variaty of factors. which relate to the music. The timeing how the two can interrelate. ect.
Then lots of thinking because nether were intended to go together. Mix in possible concepts until a focus boils out, let cool for a week or 2.While waiting Rip footage/go over it then edit.
I do know that people will likly not see my vision which does beg the question of bothering with one in the first place. The answer to that is, because it's there and at least it exists in the video. Which I consider one of the most important factors.

This has no relevence to the discussion above it

I'd say the importance when comparing a song to an anime is about 2/3 versus 1/3.
The song sets the mood of your video, while the anime only supplies the scenes. Most often, the song is picked to complement an anime, and it works, but sometimes songs are picked that aare quite the opposite if anime, and that works too, so the anime isn't as important in that regard.
The song allows you to tell a story, while the anime supplies the visuals. It's basically story vs. visuals.
