Need program to encode to mpeg2

Post by Kroell » Tue Apr 20, 2004 10:09 am

I was looking for a program that can convert the xdiv format to mpeg2. I have virtualdub, but for some reasn I can't find codec to encode to mpeg2. Also if you know any programs on the mac as well, it would be helpful.

xdiv? :)

uh, in all seriousness, you generally don't want to convert XviD data to MPEG-2. You may be able to get acceptable results with heavy filtering, but it will look better if you recompress from your originals.

As far as MPEG-2 compressors go, there are two major ones available for Windows.

TMPGenc Plus; TMPGenc. The second link is the free version, and has a 30-day time-lock on MPEG-2 functionality. It is also capped to 12 Mbps maximum bitrate; TMPGenc Plus can encode MPEG-2 at up to 80 Mbps (uh, well, so says their site, anyway...I don't know if that's just a theoretical limit or what.)

Cinema Craft produces encoders as well, but if you knew how to use that software then you probably wouldn't be asking this question :P

This is also helpful. In fact, read this link before you read any of the above links. That was bolded for a reason.

GNU/Linux stuff:
The MJPEG tools suite includes programs that can compress planar YUV streams to elementary MPEG-2 video streams, as well as raw PCM/WAV to elementary MPEG-2 audio. You can then mux these into an MPEG-2 program stream with mplex.

Mac OS stuff:
Red Wolf had a guide about MPEG-2 encoding, but I'm not sure where it went.

You may also want to try QuEnc - see doom9.org
