I'd have to say the mechanical design elements of anime are what truly stand out the most for me.
If you look at detail to mechanical function, design, and articulation I can't think of anything that comes close.

For a name, I'll just throw out Masamune Shirow if you want some examples.

heh, good to have the thread staying alive.

as far as techniques and subcategories, i really like evangelion as far as mecha is concerned. for people, i either like the old school look of Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2, InuYasha) or the new age stuff like Witch Hunter Robin. i originally started drawing by emulating mark bagley and ian churchill, pencil artists for Marvel comics.

all i can say is, dont limit yourself to any single technique. mix and match and add in your own flare.

LEIFey, loving your stuff man, especially the mecha pics. Would love to see some action there, perhaps a mecha fight? :D

Ill scan some stuff later tonight, i'm still working at it so most of my stuff is reference art.

So when you do character design, what pieces do you assemble your characters out of? I'm trying to figure out the number of necessary pieces to build a complete array of anime characters for an mmorpg. As nearly as I can tell there are 5 possible face shapes (round, oval, heart, shield, and triangle), 4 male body types (skinny with narrow shoulders, swimmer, muscular, and plump/boyish). How many female body types are there, I wonder? How many hairstyles? Types of eyes?

I don't really follow templates much to be honest, I just have one way of drawing male characters and another for drawing female characters. Then, I just adjust them individually to reflect my concept of the character and their personality

I don't suggest using too many face shapes, as eclectic styles don't actually look good together. Stick to one, just vary it slightly. Also, from my observation, the two biggest things in human character design are 1) eyes 2) of course, the hair

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

yes, i agree completely with otohiko. templates will suffice for some things but as far as good artwork goes, they might as well be used by machines. there is never a set amount of styles as you always invent more. dont be afraid to experiment. it might turn out really cool:)

oh, and otohiko, id include the mouth in your list of traits that define human characteristics. a sloppy mouth can ruin the emotion of an otherwise good picture.

Alright, my concept here was to draw a picture that included both Spike and Vash, and a main character from another anime. My first thought went to Gene Starwind, but then I thought it might be better with Wolfwood, but I wanted to stick with the 3 main characters idea, so naturally, drowning in a pool of indecision, I left the work unfinished. It has been so for about a year now. Opinions, anyone?
