The History Of AMV Making

Hey all, it's me again. Thanks for all the great responses to my last questions, it really helps to see as many sides to this community as possible.

Part of my research paper is also to look at the history of AMV making, which has proven to be somewhat difficult because there simply isn't much information out there. The closest I came was some posts I found on Usenet that talked about some of the very old school AMV creators who did 2 VCR stuff. Thing of it is though, in those discussion there was quite a bit of ambiguity and uncertainty so I was wondering if anyone here might have any more direct knowledge on the subject that I can use as a basis of comparison.

I'm already aware of editors like Kevin Caldwell, I'm looking for information in regards to the VERY beginnings of AMV making. Specifically who were some of the first editors. What methods did they use to make their videos. When and where was the first AMV anime con contest. And lastly any biographical data on these original authors, most importantly did they have any background in video editing or did their creations spawn simply because of their love of anime? I'm trying to find out if this community was originally a product of the anime fan community or rather a subset of the video editing community.

Thanks again for all the help! I'll post a link to my research paper when it's completed. I also might have some more questions later on for specific AMV authors regarding their personal influences as far as editing and if they derived any of their methodology from specific predated videos.

On a side note, to Phade (I don't know if he reads these boards or not), if you could give me any specific information as far as the growth of your website I would be very grateful. Specifically I'm trying to get as precise numbers as possible as far as member growth over the past 5 years and the AMV growth over the past 5 years. I'm looking to take those numbers and compare them against other data, such as the growth of the Internet, the growth of the anime community at large in regards to mainstream media, the sales of video editing software titles and the estimated number of pirated video editing software titles. I'm trying to see if I can find any direct correlations between those factors and the growth and evolution of this community.

I'm going to play around with the search tool right now and see if I can get some information out of it (such as the growth of AMVs that use specific anime titles to see if it correlates to other factors like DVD releases, fansub releases, etc).

A further question for Phade (if he reads this board), are there specific times when AMV contributions (uploads) are higher than normal? For example spring break, summer months, winter break?

well i've been making vids since... well.. the 90's... you might want to talk about how people have went from using vcr's to a more digital way, with more control... theres a lot there... evolution of video editing programs, the control difference between programs like premeire and WMM.. there is really a lot there... if you want to see what i've come from go to http://amv4000.com information.. thats just my personal history of amv's.. you might want to contact other amv creators *like aluminum* and get their view of it.. hopes this helps..

I'm too lazy to find the particulars, not sure how much help that is, but maybe it will make finding the history a little easier with some of the specifics.

I think we need to sit down with Uncle Vlad at JACON again, and have him tell us the story about how AMVs came to be again
