A question for all AMVers

Post by nemesisENFORCER » Fri Apr 30, 2004 5:05 pm

i was just wondering how you guys decide on what videos to download and watch? Personally i just do the supersearch if i want to see videos. But i hear that most people only download the ones with hi ratings. Thats sad because there are a ton of videos that i think rock that are not rated hi. I veiwed a couple of videos that are ranked really hi i to me they are over rated. but i guess that just me. Anyways, how do you decide on the videos to watch?

Yea, it seems lately AMV Announcements is a source. That, or recommendations.

If I like the song, or I search for one from that anime... I'm also more likely to download it if there are some notes given about it, something under "comments".

Then I sometimes download stuff if I like that creator's other vids, or if it's rated high. Or I click on random banners and download what's on people's favorites lists (for example, that's how I saw Engel). I'm currently downloading some of the VCA winners (I didn't have time to download all of the nominated videos b/c I went on a trip).

Sometimes I download stuff from the video announcements, or new downloads.

I started with downloading vids from the top 10% list, that's a good way to get the very popular videos those with lots of opinions (>30) are usually very good but it depends a lot of what kind of videos you like.

My second step was to look at the new videos list and get those that have lots of hits but that wasn't a very good choice either.

Currently i'm only downloading videos from other members favorite lists and this seems to be the best choice for me.

Every once in a while I'll look in the top lists or search for a particular song/anime combination but mostly I troll the Announcements forum. If I see a video made by one of my friends or someone I know I download it and if someone else is getting favorable comments I snag those videos as well.

I haven't watched much lately, so I'm only really getting vids by people I know, or vids that people ask me to watch.

In the past I got vids from the announcement board - any new poster, and all the familiar names. I watched everything that came out as soon as I could get it downloaded.

But when it comes to just looking for a video I think I might want to watch, I tend to go by anime. I'll do a search, filter the category (so it's the genre I'm in the mood for at that moment), and then read the vid descriptions. Since most people do a 2 sentence max "it's okay" "it's great" descriptions, I can filter through hundreds of vids and only find three I actually download. I figure if the person tells me what it's about, and that interests me, chances are I'll enjoy the video.

I started with the top10% when i joined(all of them), and i download every vid that gets in there.
This doesn't apply for the top star scale, the amvs getting good star ratings keep disappointing me all the time :(

If i like someone's amv, i download his/her other works too.

I usually check the new vids that come out, i get all the direct/indirect downloads(i can use Dap there). Skip locals if anime or song is very overused. Skip is it's wmv rm or mov, skip if it's below 20MB, skip if the word 'tribute" is in the title or the description. Seriously consider skipping if someone says that his own vid is a good one.

Mostly I go by things said in here. Or recommended videos, such as Corran's vid of the day.

Sometimes I'll search by author, anime, or by a particular song.
Another pointless post!

I search at random.
Sometimes, I will randomly search a band or song or anime.
Sometimes, if you post a response to something I say, I will download a few of your videos.
The only thing I never really use is the star scale. I have seen a few of the ones at the top, and didn't like them.
I also browse the announcements, but rarely download the movie people link to. Instead, I will see someone give a long winded or snotty response to something, and check their profile to dl some of their work (if they have any). It helps me to be a little more well rounded instead of only seeing the big names everyone else watches.
