And if your in the first 20 slots on the top ten you get about 5 times the hits of everything below. And if your in the first 10 slots, you get about 20 times that amount. I was getting roughly 100 hits a day when I was in the top 20 spots on that list. Its absolutely astounding how many people download almost exclusively from it.

What the top ten effectively does (at least to active members) is catapult someone into instant fame (fame being a very relative term, especially in the context of this community). Fame = more downloads and social clout. Who doesn't want that?

I like the new system, as I feel it adds a breath of much needed legitimacy to the list. On the old system there was a lot of shit that absolutely did NOT deserve to be up there, and most of that is gone now. The classics are back up top where they deserve to be.

What I think is the best thing to come of this new system is that it encourages people to get their own websites and hosting and not just leech off the org. Now you actually have to have talent now to make it up on the top ten and unless your a forum junkie, no one is going to give a shit about your videos. Rightfully so I say

One more point I think is worth mentioning to people concerned about the lack of exposure is that the org isn't the end-all-be-all of the AMV world. Half of the bandwidth that HypeO pulls comes exclusively from our website. I think it would be a shame for people to under-estimate the potential of the general internet. If your good, word of mouth will spread about you, and that is the best type of publicity.

I don't know if I'm alone on this, but I'm personally disgusted when I see people making oscar type adds for their upcomming videos or making "comming soon videos", or having quotes from people in the video's profile like its some kind of fucking stick of deoderant or something, or (the worst) putting trailers for your next video at the end of your current video. All this disgusting promotion is, I feel, a reaction from creators who just aren't that great and are trying desperately to get their word out.

This post did have some sort of central message but it got lost along the way. Oh well, get a website and don't leech off the org! :P
I make promo posters! But they're all in good fun, and are only on my webpage where I have no need to promote my videos, seeing as they're all there.

x2... my bandwidth took such a hammering after DV:UI first appeared in the top 10.

I fail to see how having one's own website is connected with talent, or how the new system encourages it.

Note to self: get an easier-to-remember URL.

Wait, there's something wrong with that (where "that" = the part I bolded)?

yup, I reached my bandwith limit on my webserver X_X from AR being on the top 10... so maybe its a good thing its not anymore lol.

ANyway, THanks for the explanation phade, I now see generally how it works, and it does seem to be better this way.

I do still stand behind my suggestion for a new feature to showcase New videos, for the reason of exposure, and If it sucks, it would get shot down pretty quick, as someone else already posted. For this though the old syste, would proabbly work better, since this one takes the assumptioon your video is average until proven good. Kinda like a chance to get on the top 10% all time videos if it proves to make the cut on this top 10% of new videos kinda thing. If that makes any sense. Videos would then automatically be filtered off the list if older than a certtain length of time... like a few months, or 1 year as the latest.

I think it would solve both problems people have with the new system vs old one.

How about applying some sort of filter one the opinion based on who gives it? Kind of like a Baysian per person, those who give more opinions would be considered to have more experience in judging good or bad AMVs and so their opinion is worth more. This would also have the effect of people having more reason to write opinions, to up their opinion weight.

That is kindda interesting not only that but with the opinions let say we balance not by how many you give but also the words per opinion you give. Because some people just right 3 sentences for an op and that doesn't tell you much.

Hey Chao,

I've actually been thinking about how to do something similar to that. The problem with going by opinion count is that there are already plenty of people who put "asdf" for all three comment fields just so they can rack up on opinion counts. Other people just copy/paste some random paragraph over and over again to boost their word count.

The only option I could come up with is having a rating for the rating. This could be in the form of a questionnaire for the video creator with questions like: Does it appear that the reviewer watched the video? Does the opinion seem to be thought out? Does the opinion seem to be an honest opinion even if it is a negative opinion?

A rating on the answers to those questions would give a good idea if the opinion is legit or not. The trouble with this system, though, is that it requires feedback from the video creator, which may or may not happen.

More ideas, more time...

Phade.

Yeah, i know many creators are pretty lazy about even taking the courtesy of responding to opinions left. I know i respond to every opinion. But I can look at my opinion given list and see that more than 50% of them have not been replied to.

If we could some how tie in a karma system with this it would be great. This way we could motivate creators to rate opinions and motivate users to give good opinions.

i think one solution to the rating of ratings we came up with before is have other viewers rate the rating. This would be like the "Was this review helpful to you?" system on movies.yahoo.com or amazon.com. But then you might want to move the review to the vid description page so that more viewers notice it so they can review the review. Or you could move a preview of the review to the vid description page the way movies.yahoo.com so all the spoilers aren't given away.

Hopefully since it'd be a simple "yes/no" decision, even lazy viewers would respond. And it seems to work well on the two sites above.
