Forum rules
Please observe the following unique rules for this forum:
  • Please limit your new threads (not replies) to one per week. If you have several new videos to announce, create one thread for all the videos. (Note: if you forget one you can edit your post!)
  • Offsite links are allowed, but you are required to have a catalog entry for that video as well. Threads announcing videos that do not contain a catalog entry will be moved to the Awaiting Catalog Entry sub-forum and will be deleted in 2 weeks if an entry is not created.
  • When posting announcements, it is recommended that you include links to the catalog entries (using the video ID) in your post.
  • Videos that do not contain anime are allowed to be announced in the Other Videos section and are not required to have catalog entries.

Yoinked from my post on the <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... =2163">How to make your first AMV sticky</a>:

- <b>it's a closed container</b> (don't ask me why, everyone just seems to agree that this is just bad for some reason)
- <b>bad compatibility</b> (apparently they don't play back well on non-Windows computers)
- <b>seeking is horrible</b>
- unless you're using the WMV9 codec, then <b>quality is NOT "awesome"</b>; watch some good, well-encoded DivX/XviD AVIs and you'll realize this. I've noticed that WMV (before 9) is particularly bad at fading to and from black, and probably other crossfades as well. (The macroblocking noise... AAAAHHHH my eyes!) And even with WMV9, the compression is not significantly better than DivX/XviD. You can get pretty good quality from WMV9, but the file will be just about as big as it would have been if you'd just made a DivX/XviD AVI instead.
- people are, in general, <b>less likely to download your video</b> if they see that it's a WMV, because WMV (like RM) has become <b>irreparably associated with small files and crappy quality</b> (even though it can produce larger files and decent quailty), because (like RM) it's mostly used for Internet streaming (and because of all the small crappy WMVs that people have uploaded here).

Untrue. Creating a 1500 bps vid in WMV comes to about 30 megabytes, but in AVI it comes to 45-50.

Not that it really matters when my crappy machine is involved. Which is why I love standard NTSC VCD format MPEG-1s so much.

But that's just me and my pathetic little Celeron 400, I guess. :?

... what the <i>hell?</i>

1500Kbps is 1500Kbps no matter what codec you use.

(Of course, that doesn't necessarily translate to equal quality.)

Please forgive me for saying this but this is really stupid :?

1500 bps means 1500 bits per second.
This means each second of video will take 1500 bits, whatever the codec/format you use :?

This topic has really gone off topic. He's just wanting someone to watch his video and give him tips on making a new one. I don't think he's asking why WMV is bad or whatever that hoopla about 1500bps was. I haven't watched it cause I'm on 56k (home from college ugh) but I would if i was on faster internet. This topic has gone way off course and I think it should be locked.
