Spoiler alert
Lain wais a series I greatly enjoy. You really need to see all of it, more than once if you can, to get the full story. There are many elements that lead to the conclusion, if you want to call it that. This seems to use an updated version of an old SciFi theme, it leaves you with a mysterie to use your imagination on. I think the scene with the little alien is there to add one more little mysterie to ponder. I was left at the end wondering if Lain was ever a "real" being, or was her life, her whole world, only a program, only imaginary, as in the SciFi story where the whole world was only a creation of one man's dream.
Just a side note on these off topic often offensive posts. A long time ago it was written that we should treat others as we would wish to be treated by them. If we would all remember this, wouldn't it be a much better world to live in, and a much better forum to post in.
Someone please help me! [explain Serial Experiments Lain]

Good advice. The thing is, you've brought something up that was about to be killed. Something I've learned in my many arguments I've had in life, is that some people will never be convinced of another point of view. I'm one of those people.oldwrench wrote: Just a side note on these off topic often offensive posts. A long time ago it was written that we should treat others as we would wish to be treated by them. I could bring up good points. They could bring up good points. In the end, what have we accomplished? Very little if anything.
So I propose that we let the issue die, completely. If someone uses the word gay, or something similar, be the bigger man(or woman) and just let it go. I will try not to bring up confrontational material anymore, but if I do, I would expect anyone to show their superiority by not getting offended and not adding fuel to the fire.
Thank you and have a nice day. I'm so lonely.
I hate myself

I just got in from an interesting training session for work. Namely a mental health seminar. And it has shed new light on the situation. If this was intentional of the creators or not.
Lain could very well be suffering from shizophrenia.
Most all of the odd and just plain weird happenings could all be attributed to this. And she does show most all of the symptoms.
Hallucinations: Definately, both of the visual and audible kind.
Dellusions: These went hand in hand with the hallucinations appearing as some kind of all-powerful wired thing. Wiht so many people focusing on her.
Social withdrawl: During the majority of the series Alice (call her what you like) brings this up quite a bit.
Oblivious to the condition: This world, or multi-world that existed in Lain's mind seemed perfectly real to her.
Dulled expression of emotions: Indeed, while she was very lively in some points, I'd be putting this down as merely manic outbursts.
I could go on and on. And like I said, it's more than likely coincidental... but it does make you wonder about how our own life experiences can affect our perception of such things.

Wow I never thought of that one. Isn't it great how there can be so many interpretations of one anime.
Every day I find I have so much yet to learn.
