IANOS (I am not Otakon Staff), but...

In the past it's been submitters, members of sponsoring anime clubs (Terrapin Anime Society, UMBC Anime Society, etc.), and usually people bring a friend or two.

What I can say about Otakon is that the method they have been using seems to work, because they tend to have a really good contest, with videos placed in the right categories. So don't worry to much about who they pick for the pre-screening. They get enough to make it really fair.

The pPrescreenings are invite only, not public. That is what the con itself if for.
What's the point of having a pre-screening then? If it's invite-only you might as well just send tapes of the videos to the people you're inviting. Also, what is the criteria for being invited?
Well, the people iserlohn just mentioned are the ones who are invited. ^_^

Criteria for being invited? Hmmm lets see..... Either 1) Submitting a video to the contest, 2) Being in one of the Anime clubs/ associates hosting the prescreenings, or 3) Be the friend of either #one or #two and asked to come by them.

The point is, they are no public (I.E. any Joe Blow Otaku, can't just walk in off the street because they want to see all the entries before the convention).
The point of the prescreening is to have KNOWLEGABLE reviewers rate the videos for value and content. It is NOT a free show for anyone who just happens by with nothing better to do on a Saturday.

Anyone who wants to see all the videos is free to come to Otakon and watch every single one if they wish.

As for the idea of sending videos out to everyone invited, there are too many people (at least 200 I know of off hand) that have opprotunity to come to the prescreenings. I know know about you, but considering that we are looking at 7 or 8 TWO HOUR LONG tapes for the prescreenings, I think sending tapes to people would be a little excessive and impractical to say the least.

Oh, but there will be three locations this year as Geoff has stated. They just won't be announced to the general public is all.

I think the main issue for the invite only.. is that some of the pre-screening locations are a persons home.. and there's only so much room that can be handled/supported with each of the venues.

That's another reason. Out of the three locations, two are in peoples houses. I totally forgot about that, but it's a very good point.

When I heard about the prescreenings at UMBC, I was under the impression that they were open screenings. I've never had any association with the UMBC anime club, and I haven't submitted to Otakon in years, yet I've always seen public postings of prescreening locations and times.
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

I've gone for the past two years, the first year as just a regular old person and then the second year as an entrant. This year I will be attending as an entrant. I'm bringing along my friend since she's my otaku buddy and we do everything together.

Another thing: I didn't get my e-mail about the specifics of the pre-screenings. A little help please? ^_^;;

That's because I have not send out the messages yet Dan. Still waiting for every entry to be entered into the FTP so we have all the addressed.
