What do you use? (don't dare ask "for what?")
=P obviously for the creation of amv's
ok first off seeing this is my first post, you could guess that ima noob and i am!, i have yet to make an AMV.
BUT i've learned alot about flash, and have started an amv with flash.
i jsut wanted to know what y'all use yourselves for video editing and why?
ill go first =3
i use flash because you can move everything around with the mouse, and add shapes, and masks. I also like that you can change the brightness, and the whole colour scheme of any object, along with the transparancy of an object. you can also use masks, and shape tweening to create cool cutouts of video... or if you want something smooth like a fade to black on the outter sides of a movie clip you can add a transparent gradient.
it's also very nice because you can add shapes and text with extreme ease. It's a great program to do ALL of the basics... to me it's like photoshop without the filters =P, but for movies!
(p.s. another big reason why i like this program is because i already know how to use it)
the only 2 downsides i find to flash, is the complexity to do simple/common transitions, and the lack of video filters, so i can turn stuff pixelated and stuff(and black and white... dammit flash why can't you change to black and white!!!)
so tell me whatchya use, and why =D

Jaman,
I'd like to slice this as simple as possible. most people use certain software because it accomplishes the task they want to do best. Lets say flash for example. Is NOT a non linear video editor. which is why things like small effects (BnW, X-fades) are harder to do. NLE's Like premiere, vegas, ulead, avid, FCP, etc... are made for the specific tasks of editing video streams. WHY do people use them because its efficient. you can't have only one wrench in your toolbox. because if you do eventually you'll get to something that you just can't hack without the right tools. simple as that.

i've seen some really good flash music videos. but you wouldn't be able to upload it here because the local server won't host flash files.
but good luck, i've heard flash is tough, and the software we use makes editing relatively simple. if you don't believe me, just go through the forums. you'll see how stupid we are.

Amv making is much more than just the splicing together of bits of video to music.
Back in the day, I used to have to plan out videos using a stopwatch. It can still be done that way, but I don't really reccomend it unless you want to learn the meaning of conservative planning.
Like DamagedKreationz says, don't get stuck with one tool in your box.
Personally, the creation of a current video uses a small panoply of programs. Use what you got, and learn to make what you have do things that it wasn't originally written for. Who knows, you might start a new trend. That's how animation got added to Bryce.
I like Nero, it has lots of nifty tools so I usually start with that for ripping my mp3's to disk. I know a lot of people get all funky about mp3, but a 320khz mp3 sounds just fine as long as it doesn't get recompressed all over the place. Plus I can have 2 thousand MP3 files from my cd collection on the cd, and the same collection in .wav format would be somewhat unmanageable.
When I'm done with that I rip the DVD source material using Smartripper, this lets me get the parts that I want, in the chunk sizes that I prefer. From there it goes to dvd2avidg. Take the ripped chunks and pile the peices you want into a nice .d2v file. Avisynth comes into play for whatever proccessing that the video needs. I have rarely found a dvd that could not benefit from at least a little tweaking. I like to work in 24fps, so at the least I ivtc. Virtualdub then spits out the file onto the hard drive in mjpeg format for editing. I could use the .avs file since I have a 3.2ghz, but I like mjpeg.
Adobe Premiere, plus various other little tools like photoshop, and related stuff actually do the editing.
The video gets output from premiere, and for lack of a better word, compiled with the sound into a distribution format using (again) virtual dub.
Here the stream splits depending on the destination.
Filezilla uploads to the .org.
Nero makes my svcd, or DVD.
If I needs a fancy 3d manu, or something I might break out my 3d stuff, like bryce, terragen, Lightwave, or poser.
Near as I can tell, this is a pretty typical process for many on the .org, excepting those who use WMM2, where they skip a few steps.

I use a mouse. Its hard to keep him happy. So always have plenty of cheese in hand.
Okay, flash? Well there have been diffent thingymabotitz. Any way. You said somtin bout gray scale? Or Black and white? (Please don't ask the diffrence, I had a black and white computer ie. black or white, no grey. Since then black and white means black or white and grey scale is a scale of gray) ANyway. Use an image program to change the images (if thats what your talking baout) it greyscale. Photoshop would be my choice.
I have noting usefull to say here do I.

intresting i hear alot about people using photoshop, unfortunatly its limited to still pictures... are thier any programs out thier that have fiulters that can apply to video!... like pixelation, and the works... i havea program called animation shop that has alot of neat effects, but the stupid thing only allows you to create transitions of them. for example it will transform into pixelated or out of pixelated... it won;t make a steady amount of it!
so any good video editing programs which have filters, like pixelating? if so which is the simplest?

Your stuck up a creek with out a Photoshop. Don't worry, you can swim. Right RIGHT!
Well for Video filters look to... I don't know AVISynth? It does stuff. I usualy use it as a file shunter thing. As for pixelating? Shrink the video dimentions then run it full size. Its cheap. And its even cheep.
There's a post somewhere aobut AVISynth. I'm lazy. So I'll jsut tell you that its there. Somewhere.
