Tips on editing VOBs natively in Vegas 5?

Post by Studio Hooghly » Sat Jun 19, 2004 5:30 pm

I just got access to a copy of Vegas 5.0, after only using Premiere in the past, and was astounded to learn that Vegas can edit straight VOB footage. This boggles my mind. So as I start to learn Vegas, is there anyone who can give me some simple tips on how I can get the best results out of using the VOBs? I appreciate any suggestions.

To get the best results, do it the same way the guides recommend, using avisynth to IVTC your footage before editing. Premiere can edit VOBs too, btw. But editing vobs will leave you with shit, because all you can do is deinterlace afterwards.

So once I've made the AVS file, Vegas should be able to just load it like anything else? (And sorry about the newbie questions; I'm using all new software and it's been so long since I've done any editing.)

I doubt that Vegas has AVS support. I have no idea if there's a plugin for it, but I doubt it. Changes are you'll have to run the AVS files through VDubMod to produce a .avi source.

So I write an AVS script to Telecide the VOB, then turn the AVS into an AVI, and then I'll finally be able to make Vegas happy? Is there anything else important I should know?

::grumbles about the world being too complicated::

Be sure that the .avi is in a lossless codec such as HuffyUV or Lagarith when you re-export it through V Dub.

Okay, so I've gotten the VOB converted into an uncompressed, progressive AVI at 23.976 fps. (One episode of Cowboy Bebop is 29.1 gigs, but that's neither here nor there.) Now, I know that Premiere can't edit in 23.976 fps, but apparently Vegas can. It's right there in the settings. Am I good to go, or is this also too good to be true?

Woo hoo! Looks like I'm all set. Thanks for the help, guys. Now all I have to do is actually learn how to use this program...
