Songs that use silence?

Post by BigName » Mon Jun 21, 2004 4:23 pm

I'm always a big fan of music which takes advantage of such a simple thing, silence, examples:

evanescence - bring me to life
nickelback - how you remind me
metallica - fixxxer
black eyed peas - anxiety

can anyone else name any songs that have that crescendo leading to silence then having the music pick up again?

collective soul - why pt. 2
off the top of my head b/c i'm currently working on a video using it.

cadences followed by silence are common in sonata-form classical music. maybe you should check that out.

King Crimson - Fracture (it approaches silence in parts of the mid-section).
King Crimson - Dangerous Curves (1 second of hanging silence at the end of a 6-minute steady-rhythm section that is followed by The Chord from Hell)
King Crimson - Deception of the Thrush (by far my favorite, though not every performance of it has the pause. 10 seconds of total silence. Live on stage, it seemed more like 40 minutes)

There's more, but people say my KC addiction gets annoying
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

"Flood" by Jars of Clay has a sudden break in the middle that makes the first-time listener go "Okay, song's over... No, wait a minute, they're singing again."

Man or Astroman has a song called "The sound waves reversing" where it's playing along just find and then, sudden silence. Then a clip from some 50s scifi movie:
"Why did the music stop?"
"Look at the meter! The sound waves are....reversing!"
"NO!"
Then the first half of the song is played backwards at high speed for a bit, then it goes back to normal. :)
Life's short.
