personnaly i always take the whole series...
then i watch it all over again...while at the same time im markin down eps an times of interesting scenes...usually im sure ive pretty much got the song i want to use and i listen to it till i know it by heart...helps me think up how the sequences play out

afterwards when in production i usually just ski through just like godix if i come up with a new idea or try to find an alternative scene^^

of course u wont see me trying this with something like the kenshin series...so i logically do a selecive work of which eps would have the scenes i want or am lookin for^^

then the rest as they say is....many a nite living on cafeine induced beverages and the pack of morphine if u can get one....

though actually i never do that...

usually one episode for me is not enough. i have experimented with doing that and it is really hard. i ended up having to cut the song so i would have enough footage. my first real amv i think had 3 episodes and that was tough. i'd say if it's not a moive it's good to have 2-3 dvds worth of episodes at least. so that's about 6-18 episodes depending on how many are on a dvd.

uhhh... You might want to give some support for those assertions. One of my all time favorite AMV's uses only one episode ("Forbidden Memories", in the Animasia Project) and there are plenty other ones too.

As far as footage goes, I've seen a lot that span an entire series (Though most AMV's re-use many of the same clips as others.) On the other hand it can be relatively short. I made a 7 minute AMV to a 44 minute movie and I must of used about 80-90% of the source (yes, there are spoilers.)

:? Koop's "Through Time, Through Space" video uses a half hour of video only.

"The World She Knows" has done very well.

While having such a small amount of source can limit what you can use, it does not limit what you can do.

Pretty much like some other people here, I just use as many episodes as I need. I try to have some variety in my videos, so I don't like to focus on any particular episode. The footage I use comes from any episode I can get it from, and sometimes I rip an entire episode for just a one second clip.

I tend to lose track of how many episode clips I'm using as I work on a video, but I was thinking about this for a while earlier today and this is what went into my videos so far.

The World is Square - (Game music video, so no episodes here, however) 31 disks and 1 emulator/ROM from 21 games

NERV Troopers - 17 episodes + movie

NGE: Substance - 23 episodes + movie
Final Doom "Amazing things will happen here soon."

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Substance "Everyone knows that it's a dangerous substance."

As Godix put, pretty much whatever is neccssary to have the job done.

Or in come cases, you use even more then you need.

Hell, in Bux 'Em Babes, I used only 4 episodes and I used almost the entire Kyoto arc in Prelude (My worst video) and its only 1:13 long.

As everyone else said, it realy depends on the video.

I've seen good ones that use a single episode, and bad ones that use many, so it realy depends on the editors skill to use them effectively, and the concept involved.

Of my videos, AR used various episodes from the first 15 or so episodes to Ayashi no ceres, while my Ranma video only used about 4 .. maybe 5 episodes. Sexy body cowgirls used the first 16 episodes of cowboy beebpop to find all the "sexy" shots of fey, and only 1 episode from trigun for the trigun crossover parts. Rest of my vids where all movies. Realy it depends on what your doing with it.
