I don't mean to complain about it but you have to realize something, this is made in an Asian culture were mostly only Asians live they don't have various colors of people like black, yellow, brown, etc like we do here in the USA. Now don't get me wrong I'm not racist or anything of the like I just think its stupid to complain about it.
thats true, and if i didnt know that i'd probably be MORE vocal about this, but at the same time, why did the japanees pick up ONLY the derogitory ways to draw black folks from US?

and the lack of diversity in japan is something you cant help. but usually when one race is isolated from alot of different races they tend to dog every other race out. the prime minister of japan once was quoted sayin that the only reason why japan scored higher in schools then the U.S. was because the U.S. had more minoraties to deal with.

It's always hard to tell with a character like Mr. Popo, or probably any of Toriyama's black character designs. I think the reason Popo has more of a racist design is because he's a genie. That's not to say that Toriyama is a racist, that's just how he wanted to design that Popo. I understand that Osamu Tezuka used similar designs for some of his black characters (this is only what I've heard), and portraying black people in a derogatory manner wasn't his intention. Think about it, Japan isn't as big of a melting pot as America is, and pretty much the only black person you're going to find in Japan is a rich one.
Probably too busy to be here right now.

There's Caska from Berserk, although my best bet would be she's Indian. And there's Gatts too, he's called the Black Swordsman after he gets that huge sword. I'm guessing that was a bad translation though. It was probably meant to be Man of the Dark Sword or something like that.

Then there's the villainess from Tales of Eternia but I guess if you were on a hot island for most of your life you'd get an all year round tan too.

thanks DTJB, but what im saying is that the way they draw black people came from america. they didnt just make it up themselves and it just *happened* to look like our more derogetory art. they *chose* the worst way to draw us and copied it. thats what im tryin to say.

I thought Pedro Domingo from Excel Saga was of African decent.... then I remembered his name.... Tooru Watanabe (Excel Saga, again) Looks kind Black... but he probably has a good tan.

Hmmm... I have created Many a Black anime character myself, due to the obvious under use of this cultural area.
hi bye
