Main reason: most Japanese people don't know what black people are like because they've never seen any! The only reference some of them have is films that somehow found their way to the East from America, especially around the 1970s. As mentioned earlier, Mushroom Samba from Cowboy Bebop is a big riff on blaxploitation films (complete with watermelons, people in afros, and a scantily clad black woman in a hot car). You could probably put scenes from that episode to a song from Shaft for a fairly decent AMV.

In some ways, I think those films were actually made to praise the black culture, but there is a kind of racism in praising a culture for the wrong reasons: "Wow, I sure love that ghetto-style clothing and crack-house architecture you black people gave us! Girls, get your virile black man right here!" (See how racist that sounds?) But again, the Japanese have mainly these old films for their references. If all we had for references to the Japanese were Godzilla films, we might think the Japanese are all a bunch of panicky hysterical people. It's a matter of limited perspective.

*008 - Cyborg 009
weren't two of the cyborgs black?

aha! evidence! I don't remember their names.
005 definitely looks the part, but as the manga shows, he's actually Native American (hence the face markings)

Some others forgot last night:

-Ray Lovelock (Macross 7)
-The American military commander (Memories: Stink Bomb)
-Ned Lamumba (...I think that was the last name, can't remember as definite ATM) (Gundam 0080: War In The Pocket)
-Mash (Macross II: Lovers Again) (this one's debatable)
Hmmm...while not clearly black, the skin's dark enough in some scenes you might be able to use Duke Red from Metropolis
I think Duke red is Black... Black and Maybe somehow german (I am Greman. I admit we have big noses..) President Boon from metropolis also is Black.... I think....

Barret from FFVII...

Thats all i can think of right now! My search shall continue....
hi bye

no, if i seen a 100 foot lizard walking down my street i would do the same, run around and scream for no reason thinking that would save me from the monster. (most people here think i act like a 5 year old... well, here is there chance to prove them right! :D ) in addation to that, i would also put on a pink dress, lite my head on fire and run around screaming "i am the queen of the carb people!"
