Point well taken, but my concern isn't really what I'll be doing with the system tomorrow, but what I'll want to do 2 or 3 years from now. Like I said, expandability is key. I would like a system that can do more than video editing, if I find I want to do those things.TaranT wrote:Geez, you're gonna scare off the young 'uns showing stuff like that.

The problem with your question, slackergirl, is that editing isn't that demanding on your system, at least not at the amateur level. Any machine you buy off the shelf at Best Buy or CompUSA will do the job.
Also, I've always wanted to put together my own system, so might at well learn to do it now while I'm still relatively young! (though I would hesitate to classify myself as a young'un ) I'm sure with a little backup I can do it fine. It's not like putting soup on a stick! (I AM technically a surgeon, after all.) I'll look into the barebones systems some more, but I think I might want to use this as a learning experience as well.
Another good point. I've had memory problems in the past, so I'm well aware. Thanks for the reminder, Wheee_It's_Me! I'll keep those brands in mind. And I'm not dismissing Intel; I've been very happy w/ my P3 (and my P1 before that, which lasted 4 years). But I also want to try something new, see what the fuss is about for myself, hence (part of) my decision to go with AMD. I contemplated a dual processor setup - but I think maybe I should shoot for getting 1 CPU going before having to worry about 2!I should also add, DO NOT skimp on the memory.
