What's the best annual anime music video contests?

Post by KoJiRoHx » Tue Jul 27, 2004 10:00 pm

What are the best annual AMV contests you can enter globally (U.S/Europe/Asia)? And who hands out the best prizes?

AWA is regarded as the most prestigious contest.

One thing I never understood....

Why is AWA the most prestigious? I would have to say Otakon because its pretty much the biggest Anime Convention in the states that I can think of.

ok why not ill add in my 2 cents.

From what i have heard on the forms this is what i know

Otakon is the most competative. And as of last year it was the biggest convention in the states by the way.

AWA: has more catagories meaning more entrys will be competing plus they are the only (to my knowldge) to have 3 seperate contests. (i.e. expo, masters, and pro).

In the way of prizes i dont know what awa gives but from what i have seen Otakon gives discounts and sometimes free anime realated items from the dealers room plus a plack or something along those lines.

and about awa being held as the most prestigious....i woud say that in the states that Otakon and Awa are held at equal regard.

Thats just me please correct me if im wrong.

I third it. I also have to say Otakon. It is the hardest amv contest to get into. Which makes it that the best videos will compete. Basically Toji stated what Otakon gives you plus it's #1 currently for attendance.

I'd probably agree with you on Otakon. It was easily the strongest contest I saw last year. I mean ~200 entries -> 30? I guess one could argue that since it's audience voting..blah blah blah?

They do? ;)

Otakon gives you a nice little trophy with the Title of the award engraved on it like so:

"Otakon 200X
Hiroko-Chan Award

200X AMV Contest Winner
Best XYZ Video"

as well as a few anime DVDs or Soundtracks (this stuff is fairly standard I imagine), but I think the trophy is the nicest thing since it's sorta nostalgic :).

As for AWA, I believe for Expo they give nice little certificates. For Pro, little clear, rectangular trophies and for Masters, the Master's jacket.

As for prestigious and such, that's probably dependent on the person. As I said earlier, Otakon is audience-based and some don't agree with such systems. AWA Pro is creator-based and some folks think that's a more accurate system. Like I said, everyone is different.

If you wanna go purely by con size and competitiveness, I agree with Drakko.

To go a step further, one could probably also argue that our very own "Viewer's Choice Awards" are the "best" in that (almost) every video from the year is competing and everything is determined by the users of this site. Fan or creator.

I guess what I'm getting at is, there's no definite "best." It's all relative to what you want out of the contest and such.

part of why many people find affinity with AWA's amv program & contests was the intention wherever possible to play all videos submitted.

this carried over as many years as we could until entries exceeded the time block we were allowed in the main events room.

Then, technology became available, and fan demand was capable enough that we secured an actual room for the duration of the con. This allowed us to continue to try and play every last entry we received (until entries themselves exceeded the duration of the con).

wether any of this makes us -better- is just subjective. there really is no answer.

for example: some people prefer swag to certificates or trophies.

AWA doesn't have much material in that regard when compared to other shows & contests (tho we've had some in the past).

If controversy is any measure, the most prestigious contest is easily the .org Viewer's Choice Awards.

I've never seen so much bitching in my life until I watched my first VCA.
