Fades or cuts?

Post by sycomonkey » Sun Aug 08, 2004 1:50 am

I know that, generally, effects do not make a good AMV on their own, even that using too many is a very bad thing. However, between scenes, I've seen a lot of AMVs, one's that I would consider good, that fade from one scene to another rather that doing a straight cut, for the majority of the transitions.

Is this a bad thing? It doesn't seem to hurt it, but then again, straight cuts look good, too. I don't know, I'm still a newbie.
There's a sig here. Really.

It depends on the video. If the music is sharp and fast, straight cuts may hit the beats better and keep the pace heavy. If it's slow and drawn out with the instruments overlapping each other as well as softer lyrics, then fades seem called for. That's general. There may be times when you want to do something that is *not* expected - making sharp cuts where people expect a slow fade will get their attention and add emphasis to the scene (or just make the picky beat=cut critics wince and twist in their chairs). It depens on the editor as well. Some people fade everything, whether it's fast and sharp, or slow and soft - they just like fades. Others can't do fades, or choose not to - that's up to them.

It's all dependent.

If it looks good, it is good.

You simply know whether to use cuts or phades. If I see a video with the song like "My heart will go on" using fast cuts I'd immediately give it a 0. :|

As a good rule of Thumb

Long sounds (fades)
Short sounds (Cuts)
Sound Clicks (Scene Change)
Increses in volume (Make good pullaway shots)

I've always thought that fades are slightly more graceful than cuts, but it depends on what you're going for.

Also, your sig image is too big. Read the forum rules.

Blah, that looks horrible! Guitar riffing needs both fading, cutting and incy bit of motion and transparency. Of course, all done in a appropriate way.
