Most people consider it highly unethical.

I wouldn;t at all, but its not as bad if you get permision form the person. But as I said, I;d just get my hands on the DVDs somehow or another. (just don;t steal them ;p)

Technically you can't do this because the site rules state you can't 'use downloaded' sources for videos.

Untechnically, no one here cares, so you can do what you like.

Ethically, or maybe I should say 'the polite thing', would be to cite the video as one of your sources, just like you cite the song or the anime. You can do this at the end of the vid, or in the vid description. Even if you don't ask permission to use the video, being honest about the source will shut up the org minority who actually care about that sort of thing.

Just don't use blanket statements like "these were downloaded from vids, but I don't know the names of the vids". That sort of lie is ridiculous - if nothing else, you do know the name of the *file* used to strip the clips. It's too easy to cite your sources on the org, so that excuse doesn't cut it.

Well your question is the real reason for ethics and morals.
If you use anyone elses videos and just throw your own music on it, even if you give them credit it is very well unethical, immoral, pathetic... what else can i say?

Besides people dont like anime music videos when the scenes or even story behind the amv dont match the music, maybe 1 or 2 sync bits but thats all.
If you need animes to work on remember there are always online anime stores you can buy them from.

Sadly before I got into AMV making I use to do that with peoples vids. However there was one vid that I just placed a song at random and well surprisingly it all fit, timing, synch, lyrics. I saved it under my song with the original makers name in the credits. However it’s never going to be uploaded. It was just for piece of mind incase some FBI dudes came trying to tell me I plagiarized someone’s vid.

When it comes down to it, no-one here can do a damn thing about what you're going to do in the privacy of your own home on your own computer. If you're simply going to take someone else's video (in its entirety or in clips), you're going to do it, and we're just gonna sit here and do nothing / whine about it. Screw us; it's your decision.

However, this is where the "ethics" or "code of the editor" comes into play.

We don't own the video, and we don't own the audio. The only thing(s) we add to our production would be our "edits." When you take someone else's edits, you're taking the one thing that they've been inspired to add into the mix to create something new. If you take what they've done, where's the incentive to watch what they've done? You've just re-done/taken the exact same thing.

You wouldn't be creating anything "new," in a sense. You'd be cheating the original editor, sure... but you're cheating yourself more-so.
