The old Eva question(need some proof)
I guess I should start by saying odds are you will probably see spoilers now with that said...
Ok, I belong to 2 other anime message boards(adult swim and g4techtv-horrible!) and I find neither of them to be nearly as good as this one mainly b/c of the people in the boards. Right now there's a topic about the ending of the eva movie and tv series. I thought I had this down, but I just want to make sure and check here.
The movie and TV ending are the exact same, right? In both Shinji rejects instrumentality except the movie is just done in a much different light, correct? I always thought this and I remember having talks about this with two vets of the board(dwchang and mr. oni) and they both said that they were the exact same. I'm just wondering if perhaps anyone out there could give me some proof that this is the case, thanks.

Yeah, you're right, they are the exact same.
As for proof, I wouldn't be adept enough to diagram out exactly how each is the same, but a good bit of proof, though small, is that in EoTV there are scenes of Misato dead and Ritsuko dead, and in EoE we see these exact same scenes, except we see what leads up to them aswell. I consider that a clear indication that the two endings are the same events, just told in a different perspective.

Well, EoE technically goes beyond that, doesn't it?
From what I understand, the very end of the TV ending corresponds with the scene of 'Eva breaking out of the eye' in EoE.

I was trying to say how in both he rejects instrumentality, but the person said this in return:
Were you not listening to what Shinji said in Episode 26? He said that his life is worth living in his own self-created reality that could be created by Instrumentality. He said that his life was worth living here AFTER he saw that his reality could be changed to one without pain if he accepted Instrumentality.
I also see the breaking of the glass as a way to show that Shinji's AT Field was coming down. And that everybody around him clapping was to show everyone was now there together as one. Although everyone was still in their body, remember in Episode 26 I believe we are told what a body is thought of in Eva, "A description of one's self."
I just keep thinking of reasons he rejects it in both, but I haven't seen them in a while so I can't really think of anything else.

(I haven't seen them in a good long while either, so I won't be much help, but) He definetly did not accept insturmentality in EoTV/Episodes 25 & 26. When Shinji made his realization that life could be good, he mentionedMadpierrot wrote:I was trying to say how in both he rejects instrumentality, but the person said this in return:

Nice avatar, btw.Corran wrote:I heard they took place at the same time. The tv ending in Shinji's head and the movie from the rest of the world's perspective... like HeartbreakerByZep kinda said.
Evangelion is like a good song, or The Bible, however you interpret it is correct.reality. I recall once Sharp-kun translated the specific wordings and there is no way he was reffering to an insturmentality reality, he was talking about the real world with induviduals in it. Shinji realized that with induviduals comes pain, but it doesn't have to be bad. That is obviously not talking about the insturmentality world. However, without recollection of the exact things said, I can't create proof. So maybe you should just rewatch Episode 26, you'd probably have it in the bag.EvaXephon wrote:I thought that both of the endings were opposites. In he TV ending, he accepted intrumentality and became a better person. In the movie ending, he rejected it and was doomed to starve to death in a dead world with the girl whom he hated the most.
But I guess I got everything wrong again.

I think the endings should both be taken as one (or rather two) of those things that may well mean something to one person and something different to another.

Oh, jeez, you're completely correct! ...And on another note, I heard on theory that the events of episodes 25 and 26 went on in Shinji's head during the first rolling of credits in the movie.

Based on my DVD skipping and going batty, I always figured the two episodes fit somewhere between the eye-popping scene and when everyone's AT fields started exploding, but I couldn't figure out where because I couldn't watch the stupid thing. On review, I don't think the TV ending fits as neatly into the movie as I'd hoped-- it looks like each one has a different portrayal of Shinji's "inner struggle" (tell that to your high school English teacher, whydontcha), but the movie includes it while the TV ending is composed only of that struggle.
