Another thing that sort of got me thinking, with the patterns I've suggested myself - I wonder what green-haired characters are generally supposed to be like? (Or do they pattern at all? Can't think of too many representative green-heads)
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I think that the colored hair craze started when an artist accidently knocked over some blue ink onto his character's head and said, "Hey, that actually looks kinda good...!"
Naw. I bet that during a scene in manga or anime where there were lights flashing all over, a character's hair looked a different color in a certain shade of light, and it inpsired someone-or-other to make a character with naturally green, or whatever, hair...
...Did she...just say..."Fangurl"...?

Actually I remember reading somewhere that the whole colour thing was used by manga artists to help make their characters distinguishable from the other characters. That was when things were done in black and white, (ie, they didn't shade or whatnot to create more variety).
Then when manga went colour, they could mess with more exotic looks.
Note: Black haired characters are usually traditional (in the Japanese sense).
