Making AMVs Final Fantasy (all) and Advent Children Trailers

Post by Anime-Kid544 » Tue Sep 07, 2004 8:27 pm

First thing you must know is that most of the PSX (FF7-9) have their FMVs (Full motion videos(i.e. cutscenes)) in different aspect ratios. Take for example Final Fantasy 7's endings. They all have extra space at the bottom for subtitles that can't be removed, they are part of the video. Changing scene sizes are distracting during AMVs. Also sharpness is always a plus. Ok, down to the work.

Croping
Learn how to crop in your video editing program. If you use Vegas, I will tell you how to do this. First to stretch the video to full size. In Vegas, right click on the scene and click properties, and uncheck "Lock aspect ratio". This may be the same under different programs. You should notice that in the preveiw window, the video has become stretched to fill the screen. Do this on all the clips you're going to used. Next is to remove the extra space in the videos with subtitles. Right click on the scene and click "Video Event Pan/Crop" or somthing simaler under a different program. Now search for boxes of buttons that says "Size About Center" and "Lock Aspect Ratio" and unclick/check them. Resize them as necisary. Now to...

Sharpening
This is a lot simpler than croping. All you have to do is select "Video FX" and select sharpening. Then when the properties box comes up, select the
best setting you see fit for sharpening your scenes.

And thats it.

No FF video can be on the same level as a regular anime video. There simply isn't enough good footage to work with. Sure, I too would want to make a kickass Squall tribute, but that ain't happening. Mixing sequences from different parts of the FF saga won't go anywhere cause they don't have the least connection between them (story/concept wise). And above all....how can anyone possibly watch an entirely 3D-ed video where characters move like they have wooden sticks attached to their limbs? :?

I agree with bote, but I apply that to VGMVs in general.

You only have so much to work with.

Anything can be made into something great, all it takes is an artist.

i found I Fall Without You surprisingly good, even though I usually don't like FF vids or Britney Spears. Even on it's own it's very well made, although it could have used cropping and sharpening.

The catch to FMV is that there is generally a lot more action/feeling happening in the movie, but your footage is a lot more limited.

Need proof? Download the video 'Silence' by Feanor :D

Now that is one great AMV, in my opinion of course.
It was a good portrayal of the game and characters (particularly Squall); with a long song (in AMV standards) to boot.

Plus the "cut-scenes" are getting better, especially in RPG's with Final Fantasy leading the way.
