VirtualDub + HuffyUV = ACRASHA!

Post by rhkaloge » Mon Jul 08, 2002 5:05 pm

I am attempting to convert VOBs to AVI with VirtualDub and Huffyuv, but I get a crash every time I try it. I can give the details of the crash message, but does anyone know of any compatibility issues between VD and HUV? I'm using VD 1.4.8 and Huffy 2.1.1. I also just noticed that I get the same crash using the Cinepack Codec. Is there a problem with 1.4.8 that I should know about?

Thanks

are you sure it's huffyuv and not something else about the actual file you are trying to convert?

Does huffyuv crash for all your files, for instance.?

Often, a crash like the one you describe occurs if the source file is corrupt. Try re-ripping the VOB, see if it helps.

K- I've tried with two DVDs, maybe third times a charm. Is it common for VOBs to rip corrupted? I use CladDVD, but maybe there is something better?

Thanks again;

I personally use smartripper and it works smoothly all the time

ditto here....smartripper works fine with me.....why are you trying to convert vob's to huffy anyway....you should edit them directly from the vob's.

Hey, here is a thought - how do you open your VOBs in VirtualDub? I am creating an AVISynth file to open them like I would to use them in Premiere per ErMaCs guide. I also know I can use the VOBs directly in Premiere, but I was hoping to convert clips from the VOBs to DV so I wouldn't have to keep the huge VOB files around (only have 30 Gigs to play with :) Maybe it is AVISynth that doesn't like Huffy...

Thanks;

I usually use smartripper or do a straight copy if the dvd isn't protected. And then I use dvd2avi v1.7.6 to make a d2v project. And then I make an .avs file and write something like this:

LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\MULTIM~1\GORDIA~1\mpeg2dec.dll")
mpeg2source("C:\temp\Angel Sanctuary\ep1_sc02_meet_kurai.d2v")
BilinearResize(320,240)

I use vDub 1.4.7, open .avs from the menu and convert to HYUV 2.1.1 w default options if I want to make .avi

Never had any problems so far. My comp's running WinME.

Oh yeah, my avisynth is version 1.0.7.4

OK, finally found my problem - should have seen this before. I finally noticed that the AVI file after the crash is always 3.99 Gigs. Now, I made the silly assumption that a compressed file would be smaller then the actually VOBs. I KNOW people warned me that Huffy creates unGODLY file sizes, but I underestemated them. I was also converting in 720x480, which is maybe a tad too big. I can't even convert 10% of a typical 4 episode DVD before it hits 4 Gigs. If I reduce the size of the frame, or convert just a teeny tinny bit of the video, it works fine as long as I keep the output file size unger 4Gig. Anyone else ever see this problem?

Thanks for all your help.

MPEG-2 VOBs are highly compressed relative to HuffYUV. The HuffYUV version of a VOB will be much bigger. The file size limit under Win9X is 4GB, so you might be running into that. Personally, I only convert the parts of the VOBs that I want to HuffYUV. (ie: when I need one little scene from a VOB)
