no nightwish is power-symphonic.Unpronounceable_Symbol wrote:So wait, can someone delineate "Power Metal" from all this? I totally thought Nightwish (for example) was textbook power metal, with the operatic vocals over heavy metal riffing.

For all practical purposes, as far as I'm concerned, Nightwish is power metal. It's the same reason I call Symphony X progressive metal, even though it's more neo-classical power metal.
Textbook power metal is more along the lines of post-"Follow the Blind" Blind Guardian. I think their first two albums were a little bit too much thrash/speed to be considered textbook power metal, anyway. Iron Maiden, I believe, is credited as the most influential power metal band.

Nah, I already explained that. Lacuna Coil is indisputedly goth metal, and Evanescence is similar enough to be called the same. However, its popularity often leads people to name it as nu-metal. Farlo's explanation seems on-the-dot, even though he just copy-pasted it.DJTB wrote:So...am I wrong by grouping these bands as goth? What would you call them? Enlighten me. Oh, and Farlo, thanks for all of the profound input you've added to this topic.

Wikipedia wrote:A softer version of Gothic metal evolved in the mid-late 1990s. These bands focused on female vocals as well, although not neccesserly operatic ones, and reduced doom metal elements and male death vocals significantly. These bands include The Gathering (Neth.), Within Temptation (Neth.), Lacuna Coil (It.) and Lacrimosa (Switz.). Some of these bands also combined electronic sounds and/or mainstream rock music with the traditional Gothic metal sound to create a lighter and more accessible form of the genre.
In general, Gothic metal lyrics focus on a variety of subjects: religion and God, heaven and hell, romance, horror, depression, bereavement, emptyness, and death.
The Gothic metal scene is currently very developed in Northern Europe, especially Norway.

And sorry if I misinterpreted your joke as well. Allow me to laugh at it now. haha.
How would I group Lacuna Coil? I'd have to trust Flints Judgement on it, as I really don't have too much in depth experience with them. Evanescence? I'd consider them (Hard) Rock. Gothic? Not really. They're angsty, but angsty at an exostential force, vs. themselves or their parents. I wouldn't call them nu-metal, persey, but nu-metalish.
Nightwish, I'd consider Power Opera Rock, not really metal. Though, I don't have a problem calling them metal.

Goth metal doesn't equate to angst against themselves or parents or teenagedom. Existential angst is actually part of goth lyrics. I posted this part in my last post, if you'd read it.nailz1000 wrote:Evanescence? I'd consider them (Hard) Rock. Gothic? Not really. Obviously they don't have to focus on all of them, because then it wouldn't be much of a focus, would it? ;p But Evanescence focuses on a lot of those topics. I can understand you classifying them as hard rock, I suppose, but I still think they belong in the metal genre, and goth fits them nicely, in my opinion. In general, Gothic metal lyrics focus on a variety of subjects: religion and God, heaven and hell, romance, horror, depression, bereavement, emptyness, and death.
I mean, hell, with names like "Heaven's a Lie," "Entwined," and "Angel's Punishment" (all off of Lacuna Coil's Comalies) defining goth metal topics, it's easier to see at least somewhat of a connection between them and Evanescence.
Yeah, that works too. You can classify lots of bands under more than one genre. Although "power opera rock" is more correct, I still just call 'em power metal. They're heavy enough to be called metal, and it's a genre that more people are familiar with. If you call them "power opera rock," most people won't have any familiar bands with which to compare them, even though the name "power opera rock" should be descriptive enough for most people.nailz1000 wrote:Nightwish, I'd consider Power Opera Rock, not really metal. That and there's not really any other band that truely sounds anything like nightwish. As far as Evanescence goes, I'd be absolutely fine with calling them metal as soon as they realise they don't need to fill every moment of their songs with some kind of vocal track. Going Under is really the only song with anything resembling a guitar solo, which lasts something like 10 seconds. Every other time there MIGHT be a solo, it's covered by Amy's incandecent whining/moaning.
I fucking hate that.

Yeah, that's practically a filler.nailz1000 wrote:Going Under is really the only song with anything resembling a guitar solo, which lasts something like 10 seconds.
I mean Amy's got a great voice and all, but come on.

I'm not really sure. Some people like to call them goth metal, but I can't. Sometimes the music is too cheesy to be goth. Judging by some of their topics, though, I guess I could call them goth.Iamshadowkiller wrote:also, I don't know where Edenbridge falls in to all this, but they also kick Lacuna Coil and Evanussence in teh bum
They call themselves Bombastic Angelic Metal, whatever that means.
