Video game footage vs. Anime footage
Um, here's a forum I feel should be started; even though several have probably been made like it.
I realize there is a lot of Final Fantasy videos out there, and that there is also a lot of other video game footage-based music-videos, but this in truth this is an anime-music video based site; or at least was founded by anime-based music-videos.
What do people prefer more in a music video here? More anime footage, or game footage, or an intertwined mix of both? Should we make more music videos pirmarily off of video game footage or anime footage?
what do people love more of?
what do people want more of in the future?
should there be more of anime or of video game footage, or should there be an equilibrium between the two, and that there should be a symbiotic relationship between the two?

I want to see more interesting, innovative, and well-considered videos in the future which use original visual solutions to represent music and rely on solid, well-constructed concepts - whichever direction this may be in.
I could care less whether these visuals come from anime or video games. You can make an excellent video with any footage. You can also make a poorly-edited, ill-conceived video with the best-looking footage from the best-looking source.
With that said though, I'm used to coming to this site with the expectation of seeing some animemusicvideos you know...

I just want videos to not suck.
That said, most of the MVs on this site that use videogame footage are of mediocre quality and aren't very original. There's only so much that so many people can do with the exact same half-hour of FFX cutscenes. There have been a few notable VGMVs, but because there's only so much that can be done with CGI footage that doesn't lend itself well to extreme manipulation (unlike 2d, cel-based anime where the sky's the limit), everything starts to look the same after a while.
Perhaps you should consider looking online for sites that concentrate more on VGMVs, since it seems that those are your primary interest and that this site concentrates on AMVs.

On the other hand, if my understanding of what a VGMV might be is correct, you do have the advangtage of 'unlimited footage' with many games, so to speak.
No, I've seen some neat stuff done with video game footage incorporated. (my brother, for instance, did some neat/creative things with the Half-Life engine - if only he took it further....). It can be manipulated nicely. The other question is that the making of a good VGMV, from what I've seen, is both similar and incredibly different from making an AMV, at the same time.

The more I hear from others, the more I seem to understand
You know, of all the video game and anime based forums I've started, I've never been so warmly welcomed by the first few replies.
I love video-game music videos, and yeah there is a limited amount you can only do with the same footage over and over again. But that's when the inovation, and deep creativity comes in; although the footage itself has been used a lot, you have to stretch it further than most people have used it before. Like creating a parody or orchestrating it with anime itself.
I seem to see this clearly; that video game footage has been taken at a more moderate manner, in that it has been considered to be a more moderate and less inovating manner of creating a music video than anime in general. Although like some of you have said, there are some good video game music videos out there, I also think since that so many videos have been made with 'just' anime or 'just' videogame footage, I think there will be a steady growing tie between the two as time progresses. So for the greater part, I've been working on VGMV/AMVs, music videos with both anime and video game footage.
Although this inovation is not a highly respected manner on this site with its anime-based members for the most part, I do think there is promise in this hybrid of videos.
But for the most part I would like to hear more on what everyone has to say about this subject.

Video game footage also tends to have a lot more action/feeling in it. With anime you have a much greater range of clips to work with.
Naruto, which has risen VERY high in popularity standings, at least has 100 episodes to toy around with. Final Fantasy 7/X/9/whateverIII still just has that same hour of FMV, and that really just isn't much to work with.

its a bit hard to make a video game vid original
yeah Pyle i know what you mean, i been usin some video game footage, and with its limited amounts there is, i've managed to make one posted vid so far. but when i work with the video game videos, i seem to stress myself more in making them unique, maybe its because i don't want a moderate vid with the standard final fantasy footage and rock music. so you have to stretch you imagination a bit more with video game vids, that is unless you just want to make a sub-par vid with generic rock music and the repetive footage; sometimes its good, but i can get old.
so far i see a bunch of ideals of how people precieve it, but i think its kinda narrowing down a bit more as time continues.

That's probably machinima ("machine cinema", pardon my speling). You basicly take a video game environment and some characters, scripting the action and then using PC tools to record it as a movie file. Some very cool stuff (amateur mini-movies and even profesional in-game cinema shots) have been done with the technology.Otohiko wrote:...you do have the advangtage of 'unlimited footage' with many games, so to speak.

Problem with that is, I don't think the technology is designed for use with console games, which is what many VGMVs on this site would be concearned with (if they're to even remotely fit with the theme of this site at all, the games should be Japanese in origin, and I only know of a few such games, namely FFVII, FFVIII and FFXI, that have PC ports.) The closest way I can think of to get custom clips from console games is to hook the console up to a capture card and play the game while capturing the footage.
