Post by deathagent » Tue Sep 21, 2004 4:40 pm

Tanime club I'm in wants to show some non-mainstream stuff that has not been released on DVD here so i need to convert some avi files to svcd or vcd so I was wondering what is the best way/program to use to convert them. (Preferably a freeware program)

http://www.tmpgenc.net :P

And then use a burning program that'll do S/VCDs, like Nero or VCD Easy (I have a version of VCD Easy from before they started charging for it...).

latest freeware version of vcdeasy:
http://www.google.com/search?q=VCDEasy_ ... _Setup.exe

most guides on the net are written for vcdeasy 2.0 though

I tried them both back two years ago when I actually made VCDs, and I actually preferred VCDEasy's way of doing things. And it's kinda fun seeing a menu you made actually work, even if it's totally stationary.

sounds good. When you convert the avi to mpg with tmpgnec what's the smallest you can make the out put mpg file while still having it look good if the original avi is around 170MB.

Um, if you're trying to make a S/VCD, you don't have a choice as to how good you want it to look. I'm fairly sure that for a VCD, anything other than 352x240 at CBR 1150Kbps would be considered out of spec; an SVCD is 480x480 and I don't remember the bitrate setting.

Just use TMPGEnc's wizard and select the appropriate template, and all should work.

Well, unless you get into X(S)VCD, yeah. It's pretty locked in. There is a way that TMPGEnc can be set to write lower bitrate video and audio streams (as long the res is still 352x240) and still be compatible with most DVD or VCD players by using a Video CD stream header, but the instant you try to use VBR it doesn't work (at least, in the players I've tried).

If you go higher than 1150, there's the chance it might work (1500kbps seems to be pretty safe), but too far above and it won't (making a 3000kbps SVCD, for example; the thing stutters like crazy - the only way to fix this would be to get a DVD player that can read CD media at whatever speed necessary).

Of course, despite the fact that most DVD players can be tricked into playing X(S)VCDs, they are out of standard spec. Although I'm sure the possibility of it happening was great enough to include support for such a thing.

In any case, yeah, TMPGEnc's wizard will be more than enough to handle it.
