I'm inclined to agree with Lyrs.

Tangent:
Frankly, at the advent of reality TV I was a bit concerned that it would be a successful concept. Lo and behold, every season, every major network broadcasts pilots for reality TV shows in an already over-burgeoning sea of it. It has reached the same level as sitcoms as an easy solution to grab viewers and capital.

Back to topic:
Whole-heartedly being a live depiction is limited. The medium of anime leaves itself open to be expressive. More flexible than live action. Why not use the mediums strengths to portray subject matter?

Rudely interjecting, I will use a certain AMV of unknown origin to help SS's point along.

Has anyone seen the "Dead Bodies Everywhere" video by KoRn? Random gruesome anime death scenes set to a song that well portrays the mood. Due to the nature of the internet, I've seen some things...and that video is somewhere at the top of my "things best forgotten" list.

I've never been so morbidly entertained in my life. That is to speak from a neutral critic's point of view. The artistry and amount of artistic liscence anime allows is enough to emulate, yet at the same time, accentuate certain aspects of the darker side of life...death.

If you want to see a reality based anime pick up Perfect Blue, Grave of the Fireflies or Millinium Actress, to name a few.

Millenium Actress is a good example of a realistic sapor. Very grounded in natural laws but very successful in accentuating aspects in anime fashion.

I believe the purpose of animation in general is that it allows the viewer to shed the natural laws and suspend belief. Most live action movies until recently couldn't help but ground themselves in natural laws because it was impossible to accomplish. The advent of CGI changed that drastically, but you can still argue that animation allows for greater escape from reality. I personally don't like reality shows, nor do I like movies about ordinary things and ordinary people. The world is full of those. I watch movies and animation that go way out on the fly and escape from those natural laws we live with unavoidably every day. Animation is imagination put on paper, and 99% of all imagination is Fantasy in at least some form. If you want realistic Anime there's plenty out there, but I think people as a whole watch movies to get away from the real world, not see more of it on a screen. That's why Sci-Fi and Fantasy Anime are so much more popular.
