Real metal = GWAR

I kind of agree with the pacifistic hippy (if I may call you that, sir), music is really subjective. Listen to John Cage, or Merzbow, or some of the more out-there Nurse With Wound, and come back and tell me it's not subjective.

Well, maybe it won't seem subjective... I have a hard time convincing people that 40 minutes of screeching white noise sounds like music to me. :?

I remember in high school, in a class called Writing About Music, I completely derailed the teacher's lesson plan by bringing a piece by Slug called "Silver Man." It's twenty minutes of what sounds like incidental noise and feedback, like they left the tape running while they opened the door and took a smoke break or something. Nobody could explain exactly why they didn't think it was music, and I thought it was music.

Anyway, genres run on a similar concept. If people think something is metal, it becomes metal. Twenty years ago, most black metal bands would be thrown out of the same clubs where Poison and Ratt were playing (remember when they were "real" metal? Wow.) for being too loud and abraisive, of all things. Now when a band comes along who look and sound and act exactly like Poison and Ratt, they get labeled as a novelty act, played on pop radio and sell a lot of records in England, and the singer's falsetto annoys the hell out of me.

3c. Such scores considered as a group: We keep our music in a stack near the piano.

4. A musical accompaniment.

5. A particular category or kind of music.

6. An aesthetically pleasing or harmonious sound or combination of sounds.

Me too. Now let's call "aesthetically pleasing" subjective. And before anyone goes running to the dictionary (.com), I mean I am aesthetically pleased by stuff that may not aesthetically please your mother, for example.

Heh, I think most people would be extremely aesthetically displeased by Captain Beefheart, but I don't think anyone has license to even suggest that what I get out of his music for myself is anything but pure aesthetic pleasure
