AMV Plagiarism?

Post by Rinny » Mon Oct 11, 2004 10:14 pm

We've all seen videos where most, if not all of it, is comprised of another AMV. Has this happened to anyone? Is there anything that can be done about it? >_< Also, post any incredible Plariarishious AMVs here.

Can anything be done about it? The answer is no, not really.
You can't really sue em, unless you owned the anime and the music used. Maybe on intellectual grounds or somthing, but I doubt so, AMV's are illegal to begin with.

It's been done dozens of times. I recall someone ripped a large part of Bogo's 'It's Tricky'. I even remember Matt Pyson telling us a story Quu told him...

Basically, Quu was going through the Otakon submissions one year, when he came across a video that looked familiar. Very familiar. Then he realized that he'd composited a certain effect sequence himself. He called the person who submitted the video, and it was the standard story, 13-year-old girl with no money to buy anime and no connection to download fansubs, so she downloaded AMVs for source because they were smaller...

As far as what you can do about it, I think the mods would tell you first to contact the creator and ask that they either give you credit or remove the clip (whatever you're comfortable with). After that you can probably put a request in the ModBox for the vid to be removed.

(though I suppose that doesn't really count, as according to the video info, they got permission from ShonenDizzyCow...)

YES!
I mean in legal terms you cant do anything. Because you dont own the anime nor the music. What you can do is to contact the creator and tell him to give you credit. If you are not safisfy then you can post something at the mod drop box so they can remove the video or tell the creator to give you credit. I cant think of any other thing you can do about it you can tell it to all the AMV community so we can know about it. But that is about everything you can do.

"AMV Plagerism" is a self contradicting statement, seeing as AMVs are composed of other peoples artwork, filming, music, and several other works, without any sort of achieved permission. :P

Ok fine its not "plagerism", but its the same thing the thread is about, and its still a contradiction.

Actually,
Plagerism means to take the work of another person (partial or not partial) and say it is yours.
