that of which you are refering to is death metal and grindcore... more speciifically of the more useless chris barnes variety.AKA Presentman wrote:For the most part, I'll scratch the surface on just about everything. But I really can't tolerate the guttural screaming nonsense that seems to be going on in 'real' metal. Sometimes they use it tastefully, but I'm constantly finding myself in a sea of dinosaur noises, bleh.

I'll agree about the vocals, because LaBrie is... just gay. But have you checked out Liquid Tension Experiment? That's Petrucci, Portnoy, Rudess, and Tony Levin. It's all instrumental, and any prog fan should hear it.AKA Presentman wrote:Dream Theater's vocals are painfully pretentious, as is that damn keyboard player. DT would be perfect without those two morons clouding up Myung, Petrucci, and Portnoy's talents.

Levin, eh? I keep on hearing about him, but I've never bothered to check into King Crimson, or LIquid Tension Experiment.
I don't really like when synth is a mainstay of the band's music.
Rudess= poo poo.

Yes, he can.
I like synth, then again I'm eclectic.

Of course, can't argue your tastes; but I strongly suggest you give some of the modern King Crimson a look if you want just one example of the ways in which synth played by live instruments can and does work.
Frankly, the aversion some people have to synth sound seems strange to me. There's a lot to be done with it.

And as far as I'm concerned, Tony Levin is the best bass player currently alive and working. Of course, given that I'm possibly the biggest Krimhead you'll ever encounter, you may consider my view slightly partial

How about specific examples of good KC? I don't really like fishing for good (accessible) albums, nor do I have the money to do so.
And what's with your love affair with the smiley?

Kid, I'd advice you not to bother Oto and me about our love for rollies.AKA Presentman wrote:How about specific examples of good KC? I don't really like fishing for good (accessible) albums, nor do I have the money to do so.

The love affair is... well, just that.AKA Presentman wrote:How about specific examples of good KC? I don't really like fishing for good (accessible) albums, nor do I have the money to do so.

If you're looking for examples of good KC, it's sort of tricky as you have to keep in mind that in last 35 years, they went through over a half-dozen drastic changes in terms of sound and style.
That said... I would put 4 of what I consider to be the 'must' studio albums (although the band is MUCH better live, on an introductory level the studio albums are more accessible):In The Court of the Crimson King (1969), Red (1974), Discipline (1981),The Power To Believe(2003).
But anyway, instead of my usual long KC rant I tend to give, here's a perfectly legal page with almost an album's worth of full-length samples. It's not near representing their entire range, but it'll give you a good idea whether or not they do anything for you. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but active may produce unxpected results
