Anyone watch the Super Milk-chan last night?

Post by angelx03 » Mon Nov 08, 2004 7:35 am

I believe it was on at 12:30 AM on Adult Swim. I, unfortunetely, missed it, but I heard VERY bad responses of this series such as the dub being terrible to jokes being VERY obscure to us Americans and anime fans.

I've had the first DVD since it came out.

I haven't even made it through the first epeisode yet.

Unless things change seriously it gets a major  from me.

OK...as much as I can respect Adult Swim's wanting to use the true Japanese version here, I've got to say I'm rather disappointed.

I saw the Americanized dub beforehand, and personally, I enjoyed it...some of the stuff seemed pretty blatant, but it was still fun in a fucked up sort of way.

But the big thing which put the American over the 'straight' dub for me is the acting

In the Americanized dub, while the jokes are rewritten, the VAs seem to have a lot more fun with their roles overall...they seem to really get into some of that..
Unfortunately, the straight dub they ran last night, half the cast sounded like they were just reading right from the script...
Kind of makes one look at the two dubs and wonder 'What the Hell happened between recordings?'

(So once again, while I respect their wanting the 'true' dub here, it probably would have been a LOT more advantageous to use the Americanized dub...where the VAs are actually trying...)

Why did they use the straight dub again?
I strongly prefer the Americanized. the ppl watchin Harvey Birdman and god i don't know what the hell that other thing was, probably won't get it as much as the Amer.

Their given reason: They disliked the live-action ADV segments (...probably because they have no conceivable way of editing them.)

Of course, I think one of the other problems Milk-Chan had going for it...did you see what it was following? That P.o.S. prettymuch brought down the whole line-up for the night

Reactions copied from my latest LJ post:

- Couldn't the ADV Films bumper have waited until the <i>end</i> like with every other distro company? I suppose they're entitled, but...

- Okay, that counterfeiter's handbag definitely said "MSG".

- Was that princess supposed to be a "Rose of Versailles" parody?

- Aside from the two aforementioned characters (which looked much more anime-ish), this anime actually looks like something Cartoon Network could have cooked up themselves. I mean, the art style makes it look like it really belongs.

Okay, also discounting all the Japanese text and people and pop culture references everywhere.

- How many more times during the course of the series is Milk going to say "You dumb@$$!" (with the <i>exact same animation every time</i>) and "Just kidding" (after answering the phone with a phony name)?

- I was quite amused that they chose to use a Steven Foster tune ("Beautiful Dreamer") to sell the Belgian waffles. As others have already pointed out, I wonder why they didn't use the Steven Foster <i>script</i>.

- I don't know if I want to tune in next week anymore.

Hmm. I didn't get to see it. I became preoccupied with my web-surfing that I missed it.
Apparently, I also missed some pretty sweet Northern Lights last night too
I really didn't have high expectations for this anime. Judging from the AS previews, it didn't seem all that great (in fact it kinda worried me). :|

I'll have to catch the rerun on thursday.

Didn't seem all that good from what I saw. Perhaps it's just not for mainstream america :(

I could see where it was supposed to be funny, it just wasn't. At all. That's a half hour of my life I want back (at least I got paid for it (watched it at work)).
It's cold and dark ... Perfect!

I thought it was terrible. Some of it was kinda cute and I did laugh a little, but 75% of it was me wondering if I should just turn it off. I really should have.
