Do you get both the manga and anime of a series?

Post by Strawberry_ Eggs » Thu Nov 11, 2004 4:04 am

In several cases I'd like to such as the Sailor Moon, Ayashi no Ceres, Fushigi Yuugi, Excel Saga, Full Metal Panic and Chobits. However, due to a somewhat limited budget and a bigger interst in anime, I tend to buy only the anime versions of a series. I do have the first two volumes of Ceres, but I never bothered to continue it since I finished the anime. I also have the Real Bout High School manga, but only the first volume even though the manga and anime are very different. Typically I only buy manga that doesn't have an anime series. I don't know what I'd do if anime were ever made of two of my favorite mangas Alice 19th and Girl Got Game (orginal title Power!!). I'd be torn between saving more for series I didn't finish/start and wanting to see the mangas in animated form.
Random Anime Quote:
"They've drawn us awful carelessly." Osaru (I think, it's one of thoes money guys). Jubei-Chan episode 9.

Depends. I like to see both, unless :
1.) The anime is especially long. Series like Kodomo no Omocha and Marmalade Boy are reasonably-sized manga, but the anime versions are quite long.
2.) The manga has a large number of volumes. For example, the Sailor Moon and Ah! My Goddess manga both run a bit long.
3.) The anime is nearly identical to the manga. So far, this seems to be the case with Saikano. Scene for scene, it's almost a duplicate.

But other than those, if I really enjoy a series, I often like to check out its anime/manga counterpart.

For the most part no. There are some special cases where a few of my friends read manga that I lend them, then get the coresponding anime (then I mooch off of them :D ). Still doesn't even out since they mooch off of me way more than I mooch off of them, Lazy jobless bums

I would if I could, but alas like many people here financial constrants prevent me much of the time. When I can its usually anime first, then manga. I also look for manga that either finish the story the anime started, or differ signifigantly.

Same thing with me. I tend to just usually watch the anime, but in the case of Fruits Basket, where the story continues after the end of the anime, I get interested in the manga.

the only series i have bothered keeping up on all the manga AND anime have been Ah! Megamisama (OH! My Goddess), and Shadow Star ( Narutaru).

OMG...the manga is beautiful, and the 5 episode oav was cute, but pales in comparison. The movie was beautiful though, still, the stories don't touch on the manga...which is why i am super excited about the new OMG series being released soon, though the manga still runs unfinished, its supposedly based on it. Hope they do the manga some justice!

Narutaru....the anime was a horrid waste of time...First off, they have already changed the story a bit from the anime. I suppose it is nesessary sometimes to cut down on time, but they cut out some major stuff, like it never happened! Then, the quality of animation is AWEFUL. Talk about low budget. Mohiro Kitoh's art is beautiful, very different from Kosuke Fujishima's, but still one of my favorites. But the anime just makes the characters look horrible...they skimped on animating things...so badly that they SHRINK a picture to make it look like characters are moving away at times T.T .And not to mention the out of place CG...i don't mind cg when it fits well but in Narutaru...it sticks out like a sore thumb, and is badly done, at that. Stick with Shadow Star, if you are interested in that particular story.

Eh, it all depends on how much I like a particular title.

I'd generally agree with IcyCloud's exception criteria, but if I REALLY like a series, even one of those points doesn't stop me.

For instance, I'm more than likely to eventually end up owning both the anime (assuming it's ever licensed) and manga for Monster, despite both formats being virtually identical and having a very lengthy run. Just cause I like it so much
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

So what. Donald Trump delivers my anime/manga supply to MY penthouse. AND my newspaper. (Busta Rhymes reference.)

It usually depends for me. Some series I get get both, just to see the differences, or to see my favorite manga in anime form, and vise versa (Kodomo No Omocha, Evangelion, Rurouni Kenshin), some I just get the manga because the anime makes a few changes here and there from the original version (G.T.O.) and only for a few series do I get just the anime version (Cardcaptor Sakura).
Probably too busy to be here right now.
