Revolution and creativity come in waves. Its all cosmical (if thats a word). We really don't have anything to do with it.
For the last year or so creativity in general has been shit. Terrible movies, bad music, bad amvs, bad creativity in general. There are of course rare exceptions but by and large our community has been cranking out AWFUL videos and we all know it.
What I fear are people's expectations and taste actually sinking lower to accomidate this tripe. I already see it starting to happen and I hope a new wave of awesome videos comes out to nip it in the bud. I know I'm trying to do my part thats for sure. I just wish some of our best people would get off their fucking asses and MAKE something. God knows there enough going on in the world right now to inspire some kind of reaction.

There is no revolution.
There is no spoon.
There is no fucking savior.
The "revolution" came, it's not koop, it's not kevin caldwell, it's not rozards mom. It was phade.
He made a site for this thing we call a hobby. And hopefully the next logicial step (Like consoles to gaming) is a tv station for amv's.
Although while I honestly doubt the plausibility of such a station (considering most/all our material is stolen). It could happen seeing as how TechTV was bought out by Comcast, and if someone got Comcast to support an Amv station (seeing as they own a huge amount of radio and tv stations that broadcast all music) they could find a way around the normal laws of acceptable music use.
But as for one video or thing being the revolution, I stick with what I've always said. Theres no one creator thats gonna revolutionize how we think about amv's.
Because much like koop, this community (much to it's own uniqueness) has a very Elitist streak threw it... While in this case...
Is a very good thing. If we all just gave up when Euphoria came out. Where the hell would that lead us?
If anyones expecting one video that will unite us all under one giant banner that says "fandom" and we can all hold our heads high.
Then someone better go unthaw Kevin caldwell.
"hey... no"

I wouldn`t say that videos themselves are getting worse. There may be a bigger newbie influx, but it seems like the community has gotten better at ignoring the ones who just churn out crap and embracing the ones who show potential.Beowulf wrote:For the last year or so creativity in general has been shit. What I see as the problem, is that videos haven`t gotten better. 2003 was such a great year for AMVs (I think everyone can agree on this, that we grew complacent. We figured that 2004 would naturally bring about even better videos. Well... there were a few exceptions, but for the most part, I`d say the overall level of editing hasn`t improved since 2003.
It`s not all bad, though. I think if nothing else, you can say that this was an excellent year for multi-editor projects, both short and long form. I think that the potential for these projects is only beginning to be tapped, and there`s amazing stuff on the way.
Well, if by people you mean the audience, expectations and taste are already low. All the audio wants is a catchy song, some action, some fanservice, and Vash dancing.Beowulf wrote:What I fear are people's expectations and taste actually sinking lower to accomidate this tripe. However, if by people you mean editors, then... well, I don`t think expectations are lower, but they certainly aren`t higher. I know I`ve had a massive case of creative block for a few months now. I have a list of possible videos the length of my... well, it`s just big. But every time I rip footage and start a new Premiere project, nothing clicks.
When I started making AMVs was around when I got into video production and started seriously looking at being a film major. After that first video I told myself that I`d always improve on my work, that each video I`d make would be better than the last. I don`t really think I`ve held to that recently, but if we all hold ourselves to that; if we all set our own bars, then great things will come of it.
V_O_R is right. One great video isn`t going to re-unify our fandom. It`s up to each of us to revive AMVing as a whole.

Wow I didnt think people were going to get so worked up over this, and no I dont mean that the videos and Effects I gave examples for were the first of their kind that was just the order in wich I saw them, Euphoria being first because that was the first video I dl'd when I joined this site because it was #1. Me and my friend had seen tons of videos and were even making them way before we ever even heard of this site even before we met each other (me and Majin Kenshin) actually the way I met him was through another friend who asked me to burn some footage and episodes to blank disks for him to use.
the first time my perspective of AMV's changed was actually the first time I met Jimmy and saw his videos wich at the time were way better than anything I had seen at the time. At wich point he gave me premire and I made my first compleete video, before that I just played around with windows movie maker.
I agree that this web page has influenced the way videos are created more than any single video ever will, and mabey the way they will be distributed in the years to come with have continuing influence.
I liked the Idea of combining diferent parts and characteristics of various anime characters, that sounds pretty cool.
and just for the record I dont even like Euphoria or most of the videos I have seen using the effect where you take one character and put them in a different scene, personally I think they look kind of corny and I might like the motion graphic effect videos if they ever used an anime I would ever consider watching, I just meant that at the time I was intrigued by the effects.

Revolution: When I put myself in an AMV fighting against Sasuke or humiliating Onizuka. "Bote in anime"
For me, this year has been much better than the last. A wave of awesome Berserk videos came and that was pretty much what I wanted. One guy made an entire video animating his drawings and it looked good, so that's one big leap achieved. 3D has advanced even more with videos like "Olin" and more people started using it. The editing speaking globally has advanced as well. There is a big number of creators who can successfully manipulate AE. Plus some editors have figured out more interesting ways of using good ol' Premiere (Scintilla's "EvaBebop", JBone's "And that's that").
The community has gotten in contact with MAD editors like Pianos and even some well known old members applied the similar style in their videos (VidBond007). There are plenty of new editors that proved their worth (Bakadeshi, Requiet) and of course some well-known editors are still arround producing gewdness (Fluxmeister).
The only category that was pretty weak this year is "Action". Videos became even randomer and random action isn't always good action. More and more videos now have fast scene switching when the pace is slow and slow scene switching when the pace is fast (WTF?). Timing is blatent and unprecise in at least 80% of what I've seen. I'm quite curious what'll qualify for the VCA since I'd only nominate 2. The real trouble will be in Romance, Comedy and Effects since there are a lot of great candidates.
Good year 2004 is.
