LEIFey wrote:you'll usually only use a frame when drawing figures and people, but it can be adapted for other things too like scenery. ill just explain the character frames.

a character frame is just a guideline that you sketch before you even start drawing the person. you draw sticks for limbs and balls for joints. frames will vary but they all serve the same purpose: to allow the artist to judge proportion and poses before they get too far into the picture. the best way to fix mistakes is never to have them in the first place. this is a precautionary measure. if you draw around a properly constructed frame, you really shouldnt have any proportion problems and you can spot details of the pose you otherwise wouldnt want.

Great in theory, however, this method of framing still assumes the person constructing the frame does so proportionatly. When I first started drawing (and, obviously I do not, at all, claim to be of any talent) I attempted framing, as you describe it due, to the fact that it was suggested by many drawing books to be "the correct method" of drawing. However, for me, I had more difficulty getting the proportions of my characters off of a stick/ball frame than I did free handing it. I can't determin correct proportions from stick/ball frames.

The way I work now (I'm still really learning to get my feel in drawing), is I find a pose I like from a magazine or picture off the web and, by eye, use the image as a guide to general proportions. In so doing, I can tweak the pose slightly with little proportional decay. I'm still learning and my hand isn't the steadiest with a pencil as of yet, so my results are not accurate.

I am not arguing the method of framing. For many people, it works (otherwise it wouldn't be described in so many books), however it is not my method. I have tried and it failed. If you think the images in my gallery are sub-par you should see the ones I attempted with frames. Besides, two artists rarely use the same methods and often artists use a modified form of a method. :D There is as much an art in the process of creation as there is in the art itself, and the method I use, as this time, is the method I use.

no need to apologize obsidian. in the end, its your decision as to whether to use framwork or not. to be honest, i didnt use them for a long time until i finally knuckled down and mastered them.

Image
A picture manip I did.

The following drawings were skecthes that I personally don't like but the only ones I got. They were done for my Website Class last year.

Image
The arms are out of proportion, the eyes seem rather rushed, the hair is not complete and it looks like her left hand as a death grip on her right hand.

Image
The hand sucks. It looks like I rushed it (which I did ^_^) . The kunckles are not visible and the hand looks more 2-D than 3-D. I was happy with the face. The right arm shows lack of muscle and the pole of the axe seems to large around.

Image
I worked hard on this. It looks like he's sitting on a invisible chair. His butt and legs don't have the look of squatitng down and the big toes are on the wrong sides. They should be on the inside.

Image
This one I did just for scanning. The toes are not detailed enough, I know eyes are supposed to be large in anime but they seem too large for me.

Sorry if my pictures are big. I forgot to to the correct Image
I really liked this one so I colored it in through the computer (same guy who was stooped down on the ground). Nothing really to complain except that his feet, the left foot has the toe on the outside and not th einside and the head is off center...it looks like he's streching his neck to the left.
