I just bought a new dvd player for a little over $20 after rebates at BestBuy, and it is now region free via a simple remote hack. this has got to be the cheapest price on a dvd player I've seen, so if anyone needs a region free player for viewing anime, I recommend checking it out.
it's a Cyberhome dvd player, model #CH-DVD 300
they're selling for $40 at walmart or $37 at bestbuy plus $15 worth of rebates, making it super cheap.
every bestbuy has hundreds of these right now in preparation for the after thanksgiving sale, but you can buy them now at that great price. (one store in orlando had well over 500 of them, but I didn't bother counting the ones here in houston.) for the region hack, there is a quick explanation on the following site: http://www.angelfire.com/anime/garoob/hack/dvd.html
now you can view any Japanese imports with no issues. and for cheap!

You did not "hack" it, you entered a diagnostic mode and changed its software settings to make it region free.norskotaku wrote:it is now region free via a simple remote hack.
"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

I got one of these Cyberhome's last Xmas. It's nothing special, but it works well enough. The region-free fix works and it has progressive scan outputs. The remote is too small, however.
The player is basically the same as the Coby DVD-224 (sold at Fry's for $30-$40) and a Terapin player - can't recall the model, but it's sold at Fry's, too. All three are the same size (23 cm x 23 cm x 5 cm) and have slightly different face plates. The Coby remote is much better than the Cyberhome's.
The Coby has a different "diagnostic mode" than the Cyberhome. But it can also play as region-free.

norskotaku is right about the quantities. I've seen pallets stacked shoulder-high with these things. They're churning them out by the millions.
