Manga to Anime-hit or miss

Post by fizzucker » Tue Nov 23, 2004 8:31 pm

when you compare a hit TV anime from to a hit Manga, alot of people say one is better than the other.....every1 has their opinions of this....for example while i enjoy Fruits Basket and Trigun more in Anime than in Manga, the Love hina and chobits series do it more for me in manga than in Anime....so the question is, which is better in manga and which is better in anime? also what mangas do u think will become huge hits as an anime and which should simple remain as a manga?i love the "sergent frog" series, but an anime might ruin it for me.....however, a "Kill me, Kiss me" anime seems perfect.....thought? (BTW if wither sgn. frog or kill me kiss me is an anime, please let me know)

Kare Kano:
Anime's better up until the last few episodes, then the manga is better (if only because it continues).

Azumanga Daioh:
Anime's better, but mostly because it's just inherently so much CUTER when animated.

Excel Saga:
Both are very funny. But the anime can't really be compared to the manga, because so much of the stuff it does is dependent on the medium (like making the story diverge and head towards a dramatic conclusion for the sake of keeping it to 25 episodes).

FLCL:
Anime's one of the best I've ever seen. Manga is confusing and puts me off with its intentionally harsh art style.

Fushigi Yuugi:
No preference, they're both quite good.

Darn, forgot one.

Hellsing:

I found myself laughing at the manga a LOT more than at the anime, mostly because of Victoria's priceless expressions. (The scene where she takes the tour group of Japanese geriatrics through the art museum where Alucard and Alexander were just about to duel is just golden.) And I like the whole "Millennium" angle, even if it does seem quite the unlikely scenario. Which, by the way, is also what makes the whole meeting between Integra and Enrico Maxwell so much better than it was in the anime -- it gives it a purpose. In the anime, nothing really gets accomplished at the museum, and it just seems like a big excuse for an Alucard/Alexander rematch.

However, I really like how the manga shows us how Victoria has to cope with her new unlife and getting along with the rest of the organization, a topic that the manga doesn't cover very much. Same with the relationship between Alucard and Integra. And the plot and writing of the anime, though Incognito might not be as FUN as the Millennium people, seem a lot more mature and refined than anything I've seen from the manga-ka. Whoever adapted it to the screen was obviously trying to make it darker and less funny (except for the next episode previews), and I think they succeeded admirably.

Scryed:
The manga took a very different approach, in more than one way. Kazuma's character is very different, but the story is also far more compact. The manga has its share of unexplained things, but it also has a lot more humor. Oh, and Kazuma is a far more interesting character. In the anime, he's pretty mercenary, except when it comes to Kanami and certain principles. In the manga, he's more focused on the principles, and fighting the righteous battle. In D&D terms, in the manga he's a slight pathological chaotic good. In the anime, he's more pathological and less good, far closer to true neutral.

But that's just my take on it. Certain story elements were carried over, and some of the main characters, but a lot was changed. And certain tragic events were heavily nerfed. :/
