What's Your Definition of "Anime"

Post by Shounen » Thu Nov 25, 2004 12:37 pm

We all know what anime is in general, but what is your specific definition of what anime is and what you would consider anime? You may find that is is dificult to precisly define this almost abstract term.

My thoughts:

Anime n. (ă•nē•mé)
Written in Japanese katakana: a - ni - me

Literally meaning animation or animated cartoon, a Japanese slang word, short for 'animeshon,' derived from the English word 'animation.'

Dictionary.com definition:
A style of animation developed in Japan, characterized by stylized colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sex.

My definition rendition:
A genre of film characterized by a style of animation developed and produced in Japan (related to the Japanese art form similar to comics, known as manga)
God's in his Heaven, All's Right with the World - NERV
[Robert Browning]

Anime = animation in Japanese, used in Western culture to denote Japanese-manufactured animation. Often (mistakenly) associated with one or a few well-defined styles and genres.

In actuality, the definition of anime probably depends on the context.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I thought that was smack?
It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.
