It's possible to refer to power metal bands as serious*? And not have your points drop to zero anyways? WFMOB.nailz wrote:I hope you're not refering someone to dragonforce as a serious band, Kai. If so, respect points drop to 0.
*caveat: Taraxacum, some others I'm not obligated to whore out
Shin Hatsubai is a Premiere-free studio. Insomni-Ack is habitually worthless.

you clearly are new to metal, and since you're interested in becoming a fan, I'll let it slide.
You can find some samples of stuff on most band sites, and you can find a lot of good metal at www.centurymedia.com
Bands I'd recomend would be
Mercenary - www.mercenary.dk
Nightwish - www.nightwish.com
Elvenking - www.elvenking.net
Freternia (now defunct)
Iron Savior - http://www.iron-savior.com/
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Demons and Wizards
Freedom Call
Gamma Ray - www.gamma-ray.com
Haggard
Masterplan
Dream Evil
Primal Fear
Tarot
And bands at the top of the list should get priority.

What you like is what you need
There are alot of progressive rock bands out there. If you ask for recomendations, then you're likely to get alot. Then you'll be searching them all for god knows how long before you actually find something you like.
Ask youself what sort of music you really like, and what sort would be suited to the situation. Then do an accurate search for exactly what you need and want. It's much easier than searching for something good that isn't of your interest in music.

Re: Progressive rock/metal suggestions?
If you'd like to sample the early days of progressive rock, these are some that I have in my collection (these are in addition to Gentle Giant and King Crimson that Otohiko mentioned):Dave_911 wrote:Can anyone suggest some progressive rock/metal for me?
I havent listened in awhile but since i saw botes vid with blind guardian, which reminded me of iced earth, i started up again.
So...anyone got suggestions?
only suggest the things that not everybody knows of cuz chances are, ive heard them before, after all i happen to fit into the category of 'everybody' =)
Caravan
Camel
Renaissance
Genesis esp. their Peter Gabriel period
Barclay James Harvest
Marillion is from a later period, but is worth checking out if you like it dark and lyrical and with an Eighties guitar-rock style. I like to compare them to Genesis, except that their stories are more down to earth than the fantasy tales that Banks and Rutherford put together. I prefer Marillion's Hogarth period, but the earlier works with Fish include classic songs like "Kayleigh" and "Warm Wet Circles".
