Surpassing Expectations

Post by devilmaykickass » Mon Dec 20, 2004 6:40 am

Have you ever seen an anime that you expected little or nothing out of, and it completely blew you away?

I just saw Steel Angel Kurumi and...DAMN, it's my new favorite. From looking at the box, and the video teasers, and stuff on the net, it just didn't look interesting at all to me. I bought it cause I found "The Complete Collection" for an amazingly great deal, and since I had a bunch of extra money on me I though "eh, what the hell"...well, I ended up sitting and watching the entire first series in one sitting...and wow...just wow. And I haven't even checked out the OVA or the second series yet (which both came with the set as well).

So have you ever had your expectations surpassed?

I'd say of all the series like that, it would probably be Fruits Basket. I'd expected a pretty typical romance comedy, with a dash of the Ranma-esque form-changing. But once I got into the manga, I found myself really enjoying it. A very pleasant surprise.

Fruits Basket, which I avoided like the plague due to its disturbing squealing fanbase (which I am now a proud member of) and Peacemaker Kurogane. The art styles of both were also a turnoff for me at some point, though now I've grown to love them...Nanae Kurono and Natsuki Takaya own equal shares of me.

For me that would probably have been Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. It was one of the earlier Gainax titles and I was not sure how it was going to go. I mean I had seen some of the designs of the characters and was impressed enough to want to see it. I was interested in the progressive development of creators and I was interested in what the makers of Evangelion did before that show premeired. There was not much that came out of the late 1980s that made me get too excited and I went in watching this with no real expectations.

What I got was an adventure that was right up there with Raiders of the Lost Ark :D Stylistically and narritively the show had many influences both from Japan and outside it. The series does lap back into goofiness from time to time, but it finishes strong and in a satisfying way. I still think that this is one of the unrecognized gems that will get its proper due someday.

Midori no Hibi.

C'mon, a talking hand with a shape of a girl seems REALLY far-fetched. But after watching a couple episodes with my sister, we laughed our ass off. Even some of the romantic moments was very good.
