AMVapp mftoon?
ok, please treat me as a newbie, for that is what i am. Ive tried following the "A&E's Technical Guides to All Things Audio and Video". Im trying to apply the mftoon thing. Ive downloaded the amvapp, installed, all that good stuff.
now when i get to the virtualdubmod 1.5 script editor heres whats in it.
mpeg2source("C:\Documents and Settings\Gizmo\Desktop\DVD\Cowboy Bebop\cowboybebopd2v.d2v",ipp=false,cpu=4)
LanczosResize(848,480)
deen("a3d",4)
temporalcleaner()
mftoon(strength=128)
when i try to refresh the virtualdub it says theres a script error and it cant find a function called mftoon.
ive tried re-reading the guide, but im not doing very well apparently. thanks for the help.

Plug It In
I've had mishaps with AMVapp myself. (mpeg2dec.dll and the decomb filter did not autoload etc.)
Personally I said screw it and did things manually myself, but you could try to load the plug-ins with script.
Try it with the regular Vdub just in case the mod is acting up.
If you can point me to a web address to obtain the plug-ins I will see if I can figure them out.
I skimmed a bit of the new guide, but I gave up on AMVapp sometime ago. That and the old guide had too many half facts about anime.
So if you know where to get the plug-ins for the functions I might be able to solve the mystery.
Here's what I would do:
Remove all the code and tweaks to the functions. Build it up line by line using the original Vdub. Add in the tweaking last.
One last thing, go to the AviSynth website and read it. Also read the AviSynth guide.
I recommend independent research. The new guide covers a lot, but I'm nuts so I have to dig deeper. I'll search around mftoon() seems useful.

Find your AVISynth directory, then go to the Plugins (or Filters) subdirectory. Then download this file to that directory:
http://mf.creations.nl/avs/functions/mfToon-v0.52.avs
and rename the extension to .AVSI (so that you don't have to import it).
(I don't know which version of mftoon the AMVapp uses, so I just linked to the most recent, which is almost a year old by now.)

You know, if you have a problem with them, you could suggest changes instead of whining. I suppose that that would be too constructive, though.

Actually I don't whine.
I just suggested that the other person do independent research. I also suggested some additional reading like the AviSynth Guide itself.
I just did a whole lot of research myself.
Everything from how the human eye and brain see to the VCR Wars to what the hell the blinking lights on a stereo actually are.
AD's Guides:
AD's guides are nice for people with a new hobby. I think he is nice to take the time to make them for people. I also think they are very handy, especially on codec history. (Histories of codecs get really obscured sometimes.)
Most of the half facts were actually about anime not video anyway.
I think it said something about most anime being created for with theater in mind in the old guide or something. (Its been a while since I read the old guide.)
Most animation is actually at a rate of 8fps or 12fps. Anime often goes higher and CG often higher still, but you have to remember an animation team has to draw all of this and fast too.
The old guide (dont know about the new yet) came up a little short in the artistic department. Otherwise Pan&Scan would be more than not recommended.
Its not like a perfect 4:3 picture is always in the middle like some people seem to think when making videos. The illusion of distance and space often get tossed for a Pan&Scan.
Also cropping the top and bottom to make 16:9 can screw with picture dynamics like triangularity. This kills the depth perception of the shot, especially for close ups.
I just like to take things at a higher level than the guides were ever meant to go. I have nothing against them.
Hell, I've been making my next two videos entirely in AviSynth script with Vdub as a pass through. Well except for a handful of frames I swapped to RGB to apply effects that I have yet to find for AviSynth. So I take AMV creation to a level most find..hhmmm...shall we excessive.
mftoon():
Turns out mftoon() is only in AMVapp to my knowledge, but files are easily identifiable.
So, apparently it was an auto loading problem like I thought.
Even still mftoon() is an early version so its likely less than a stable thing so its not like AD can help it.
I read the old guides and much much more. I know what I'm doing enough to make suggestions. I also know that you should not poorly paraphrase what you do not understand. I merely think the old guides (which I was referring to most of the time) came up short in some areas.
Ive gotten all the old stuff to work. I just don't use it. I just found out the new guides are up as well.
Gee I also seem to remember making a lot of suggestions both to fix and understand the problem.
I'm making my 6th video entirely in script save for a few frames of RGB. So I had an interest in this topic. What was your interest?
Posting just to insult someone is soooo much more constructive.

Watch out for people like trythil. They are the reason I rarely go to this site anymore.

I've been making my own guide. Its just taking a while because it is enormous with a great many details as stated above. When I am done, reading it all in one sitting would make blood shoot out your nose.trythil wrote: "I haven't really read the new guides, but I think they're crap anyway."

My interest lies in computer animation and digital video processing, which, appearently, concide with yours.
That's all I'll say about that. Your holier-than-thou attitude is something that I don't think anyone can fix, nor is it something that I'll attempt to deal with. Let's just say you're not the only one who "takes things at a higher level".
When people ask for a solution, note the context in which they've asked it. In this case, it was a problem with the AMVapp. The best solution is not often to just throw the whole thing away, but to search for problems in the system. In this case, that's what it ended up being.

That's bullshit. It said anime "movies" (i.e. not anime TV shows) are designed for the theatre. Which they are.HeavyMetal wrote:Most of the half facts were actually about anime not video anyway.

As for your complaints regarding pan and scan it is only even remotely recommended for mixed source footage where you have a greater proportion of 4:3 material than 16:9. If you don't want to crop you dont have to, I simply instruct people how because many people want to know. The guides aren't as "you must do it this way" as you think they are - they are "you can do it like this... here is a practical method of doing this". I don't expect anyone to be slaves to the numbers or anything - I just teach how to use the tools, the way they apply that knowledge is up to them.
I would certainly like to challenge you on the grounds that the guides are EVER paraphrasing something that is not understood by the writers. Especially when it seems to be more that you have misread the guides rather than the guides are incorrect.
Of course the main problem here is that you did not offer any help whatsoever to the person posting. If you suspected it was autoloading then you could have said "It could be something to do with the autoloading". Your dismissal of the amvapp is pretty narrowminded given that the current amvapp is completely different from the old one written two years ago to the point that every single part of it has been rewritten, redesigned and so on. All you did is tell the user "oh don't use the amvapp, I think it sucks" based on out-of-date knowledge. While having users understand how the programs work is a noble thing, blaming the amvapp isn't particularly helpful (mostly because of the way the new amvapp works means that the amvapp does very little interfering, it just uses official installers, copies files and everything is optional).
