I'm not an ADV apologist, but a 13-disc release sounds awfully like a japanese release schedule. Maybe that was one of the licensing agreements laid down by the japanese company when ADV bought the distribution license for the show?
My favorite video: Grilled Steak Trigun I LOVE THE COPS! Rargh!

There is a move to world wide releases that occur at the same time. I am not sure if ADV is getting pressue from Japanese firms, but I certainly know that they are not sitting around figuring out ways to save customers more money... not that I blame them..they are figuring out ways to maximize profits.
The essential anime series put out by ADV has one purpose: repackage and sell titles that had not moved much before while they still have the distribution rights. That is why the prices are now down to a more affordable $19.99. It is not out of the goodness of their hearts.

Look on the bright side, ADV hasn't decided to charge us $25-$30, like Synch-point did with FLCL (but then again, they could get away with it, since the OVA was only 6 episodes long).
There's always Best Buy, who seems to be selling it at $12 per volume (assuming they'll keep their prices consistent after the first volume).

What you're all forgetting is that Synch-point and ADV probably had to pay ASTRONOMICAL licencing fees for FLCL and Gantz, respectively. I'd say Synch-point earned their $30, because the FLCL discs had tons of extras and despite the short episode count rank among the top anime DVD releases of recent memory.
As for Gantz, well, it had a small fanbase to begin with. There are many reasons why ADV might be doing this, and it may be because of pressure from the Japanese studio. Everyone's releasing the hounds before ADV makes an official statement as to why they're releasing Gantz in 13 volumes, and I think that's what frustrates me the most.

I thought I'd come back and have a look at this topic I started again, since I read a review of the first Gantz DVD on Anime News Network. The only real complaint the reviewer had? Too few episodes on the DVD. I think we're all in agreement here that ADV are doing a baaad, baaaaaad thing, no matter what their reason. Has anyone else tried to raise the issue with them directly? I e-mailed them a complaint (phrased very formally, politely and sensibly) but they ignored it.

Arcane Azmadi wrote:As you may or may not have heard, ADV have licensed the relatively recent TV anime GANTZ for North American release. It will have all the censored sex and violence removed from the TV release and fansubs restored, which will certainly spice things up a bit. As an Australian, I can expect it to eventually trickle down to my territory and I would be eagerly awaiting this, especially as I have a particularly tasty AMV lined up for this series. However, there is a sinister twist to this story:
Where do ADV get off thinking they can release a 26-episode series on 13 2-episode DVDs?
This is the single most outageous rip-off since Blue Submarine No. 6. ADV seem to have got the idea that just because they're released the uncensored version, they can rip off fans who are already suffering from their erratic translations and sub-standard dubs. And what if this sets a trend? We could see more series' released in this ridiculous manner, costing us a bloody fortune!
I'm attempting to organize some sort of protest or petition about this- I've contacted ADV and will try and get things going ASAP. So who actually gives a damn about this, or are we all already using fansubs and rips of pirate DVDs to make AMVs?
To tell you teh truth i am not supprised at all ........ if you want to make money there is only one ideal " Me, My self and I" It's a b**** but hey nothin we can do about it.........
By the way how do u know that Gantz has 26 ........i have only seen 24 and it seemed that it ended.......but...... if you have info shoot..

I had a problem with this too, especially since the first 2 Japan DVD's come with 5 eps and not 4. I'm also not that thrilled with having 13 DVD's sitting on my shelf for a 26 ep series, seems like a waste of space. So I guess the only thing I'm really pissed off at is having to wait a year or two more for the boxed set... which is a long time to wait to save on money and space.
Well, if there cheap enough....
