I think the thing about Excel Saga is that it spoofs a different genre with every episode. If you are not a fan of that genre then it may not be an easy thing to like..If you are a fan of the genre, then you will definately die laughing. It is also a series that requires you to have seen a LOT of anime. Much of it is going to fly right over your head even with the vid notes, but you would be doing yourself a service if you have seen a lot of anime before watching it.
You want more bang for your buck, watch the series after having been immersed in anime and otaku culture for several years..

I agree that there really isn't any hardcore fans of excel saga, or atleast that i have seen, but still i love the series so much.dokool wrote:I don't really think Excel Saga has a "hardcore fan"-base, or at least if it does it isn't nearly as big as the more-often discussed shows (Inu Yasha, Naruto, DBZ, etc), for exactly the reasons you mentioned. It's a tough show to get through if you don't have a bit of a high (and low)-brow sense of humor, and if you don't appriciate the references or the puns then you won't get it.kingmob_867 wrote:Oh man I was expecting a more angry response, not that I'm trying to flame or anything. I just figured that the hardcore fans would be coming out and asking for my head.
I mean, I've only seen maybe 1 or 2 Excel Saga cosplayers in my convention life, and both were Menchi. The hardcore don't flock to Excel Saga, the refined do

Oh and i think it was a-kon or animefest a while back that i saw two people cosplaying Excel and Nabeshin.

One of the better jokes in the America episode was a kid wanting to go to Japan because there animators are kings, treated with respect...
If you know the state of japanese animation, there are many animators living with their parents because they cannot support themselves being an animator... bit of an inside-inside joke, but I got it.

I'm a hardcore fan of Excel Saga. I own both the IMPerfect Collection and Puni Puni Poemy.Matticans wrote:I agree that there really isn't any hardcore fans of excel saga, or atleast that i have seen, but still i love the series so much.dokool wrote:I don't really think Excel Saga has a "hardcore fan"-base, or at least if it does it isn't nearly as big as the more-often discussed shows (Inu Yasha, Naruto, DBZ, etc), for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Every time I see it, I can't stop laughing. It's funny every time you watch it, especially when you know the genre being parodied (I like the "Dating Sim" episode Love Puny, since I've played a few of these and think that they hit the nail on the head with the parody

While PPP is also funny in parts, it's the unconventional commentary that gets all the laughs; in fact, it is the best ADV Films commentary I've ever heard.

I thought Excel Saga was quite funny, although I generally like comedies where the villain is the star of the show; e.g. Invader Zim or Pinky & the Brain.
Excel Saga does lose some steam around the middle episodes, but IMHO it's still worth watching, as I thought that much of it was hilarious. Still, as this thread shows, humor is very subjective and quite a few people find it annoying rather than funny.
In conclusion, count me amongst those that have seen the entire series and didn't think it was a waste of time.

A side note
I watched the whole I'mperfect collection and at first, didn't get it at all even with the Vidnote stuff. It isn't until you watch it dubbed that you can fully appreciate it's glory!
