Not every video. I do occasionally download a good one. Just not very often.

This has been discussed many times. The fact is, with the anonymity of the star system, people are able to be more honest with their ratings. If somebody is giving identical stars to every video they download, their star ratings get discounted. And really, I don't think there are a majority of people who would dish out random stars just for the purpose of being able to download more. Sure, the system isn't perfect, but it works.

I have noticed lately that I give more 4's than 3's. But then again.. now it's the time when people pimp AMVs for VCA ^^''

So then, there was no point in this message.. go me.

1 - The worst video I've ever seen (never given one)
2 - Could use LOTS of improvement
3 - Good concept, lacking execution, or lacking concept, good execution.
4 - I like it
5 - HOLY CRAP! AWSM!

My system.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

I always think carefully about star ratings before I leave them.
I give a one if I thought it was 'bad' (= if it didn't look like any thought/effort put into a it, or if it made me fall asleep) (I've only given about two 1's before)
A two if it looked like -some- effort was put in, but was still boring/not original.
A three if it was 'good' (showed effort/quite original)
A four if I enjoyed it, eg.it made me feel something (other than boredom)
A five if I enjoyed it and was also *really* impressed with it (showed exceptional skill)

Haven't given a 1 either. I try to be honest when giving them, but for most of the time it's the first impression that decides. If I change my opinion about the vid afterwards I change the star rating. Quite simple really.

1 generic crap or horribly executed
2 good, but not something i want to watch again
3 either it was really good despite that i didnt like some aspect of it, or ill put it on my hard drive.
4 really good, but not the best i've ever seen
5 cant get enough for the rest of the day

I take the time to look through the entire video usually to try and give a accurate score, but sometimes the creator makes it difficult if its a song or anime i really dont care for. Most of the videos I run into I give a 2 because its not crap, but it certainly could be improved. I wouldnt take the star system too seriously, just as a general indicator, because ive seen some videos that were ranked low that were actually pretty good but something about it wasnt ordinary, so it was given a lower score.

Average!?

Post by INFERNO-x » Mon Jan 10, 2005 2:30 pm

First I was never debating what average means i was only trying to say that above average amv's get below par ratings.

The only videos I give 1's to are the videos from creators that don't read the rules for posting local. Like posting a video in a compressed state, like zip, or posting an .rm file. I only do this because even if I have the software to play it some others may not. My most are 4's and 5's because I understand what goes into a video and I can appriciate the art for what it is, not give it a low score because its an anime I don't really like or a song I don't like.

Anyway, lets face it, star ratings make everyone angry. Who wants a project that you've worked on for hours to be viewed as below average. Even if it is deserving.

Because you won't improve if you can't recognize your shortcomings. Complacency will result in a person churning out the same caliber of work time and again. Of course it's nice to be complimented and praised, but without honesty backing it up, that's useless. If you'd rather not have that type of feedback, you're welcome to host your video offsite, but if you choose to upload it to the .org, that's one of the conditions. If your ratings are on the low side, then see if you can find out why that's the case, and work on that area next time. That's how you improve.
