Star Ratings Got You Seeing Stars?

also would just like to point out that not many people I know use the rm player.

Yeah, I hate using it myself. So I just don't download rm files unless I have to - you can check what file type the vid is before you download it (hovering your mouse over the local button). So, if you don't like rm, or don't have the player, you can just avoid them. Lots of people do that. ^.~

Yeah I recently found that out from an earlier post. I'm going to use the rm codec because I like to dl all the videos I want based on song and anime. Are there anyother formats anyone has run into that I probibly need to get a codec for?

If you see a vid with '.qt' as the extension, it's a quicktime video. Just like rm needing a realmedia player, for qt vids you need the quicktime player. I absolutely will not download those. I have realplayer and I'll use it if I have to, but I won't install quicktime on my computer, not ever. I've had nothing but trouble with that program.

I've got it and just about every other player/codec known to mankind just so I >can< watch any video that strikes my fancy. But god, do I hate it because of all the ads and other junk they try to force on me. (Ditto for qt/mov files.)

Quicktime player is by far the worst player in the world in terms of system resources it needs to opperate. I love creative's player except the interface but it runs well and comes with a big stash of codecs.

but anyway getting back to star ratings, can you change a star rating once you have given it?

If not i'll have to make it up to the wrongful 1 stars by giving them opinions after I redownload their videos.

On the 'my downloads' page you'll see a list of all the vids you've downloaded, click the number you gave the vid and you can change it - then scroll down and hit the 'okay/confirm' button at the bottom of the page. You can always change star ratings, no matter how long it's been since you got the vid.

First I was never debating what average means i was only trying to say that above average amv's get below par ratings.

No, listen. There is no such thing as "above average", as if that's something you can measure, like height or distance. It's an opinion. It changes from one person to another. You may think better of your video than other people do, but that does not make their opinions wrong, and it does not mean that you've been cheated or you "deserved" a better score. It just means that you think different things about the same video.

Also... it's not that important.

A for Effort regardless of results, huh? Eesh. I'm not even going to touch that. Yes, making AMVs is hard at times, but so what? If effort were the only thing we were rating, there would be no other slots on the opinions page. Guess what, though. There are more. Such as originality and reviewability. Those things. Quality. Y'know?

That, I agree, isn't a good metric. But let's face it: Not everybody is going to love your video as much as you do. They're like children - their parents think they're awesome no matter what, even if strangers think they're awful little monsters. You aren't an objective observer.

Nor is it our job to say "Oh, making videos is hard, here's a 5." We all know making videos is hard; that's kind of beside the point. The point is what you do with your effort, not that you tried at all. Trying is good, it's great, but we're not here to pat everybody on the head and hand out gold stars just because they tried. We're supposedly meant to give honest opinions of the results.

Anyway, lets face it, star ratings make everyone angry. Who wants a project that you've worked on for hours to be viewed as below average. Even if it is deserving.

So? Other people might not see in it what I see in it. Why is this a problem? Are you making videos in order to get a high score as though it's your only reward? That's what your comment sounds like, like editing is some sort of thankless task that you're forced to endure, for which you are repaid in high scores. If that's the case, please stop, because you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I would like to start by saying that I love you sarah. Then I would like to say that I agree with your comment about it being opinion. Then I would like to say that I don't give A for effort, although I see where I implied that. I was just saying, and this was my whole message, that If they took the time to edit the video so it times up perfect with the song and the song makes a good video mixed with the anime I would give a 4 just for that because in MY OPINION thats the way that the star rating should be used but then again leaving an opnion is for that also. I use it more like leaving an opinion as an overall so that I dont have to leave a proper opinion.

Anyway you can probibly find something wrong with that too, so go for it.
Maybe you will tell me that I have the worst run on sentence you have ever seen. Or let me know my spelling isnt perfect. Its ok go for it.

I say the star rating system should be on a scale of 1-10.
